Lady Trojans drop Blackhawks on opening day
OXFORD – Oxford played host to the Lady Trojans of Greene – however, due to a schedule change it was Greene who was the official ‘home team’ and they wasted little time in showing their ‘home field advantage’ with an 11-9 win.
Opening day in Oxford, New York, April 3, the sun was shining, a cool breeze was blowing – and two Chenango County varsity softball teams were ready to lay it all on the line and get their 2017 seasons underway.
Both programs saw some change at the helm since 2016, as Rick Smith is now the head coach of Greene and William Hunter stands at the top as Oxford’s head coach.
Despite Greene taking the eventual win, it was the lady Blackhawks who drew first blood when Allison Beckwith singled on a ground ball to center field in the top of the first inning – sending Kylie Roys and Raigen Ehly home.
Up 2-0 over Greene, the lady Trojans continued to dig themselves in a hole early, as R Tefft was able to steal home, drawing the Oxford lead to 3-0 by the close of the top of the first.
The score would move to 6-2 in the high-scoring affair on Monday evening, after Greene was afforded their first at bat attempts. Their first at bats turned into an onslaught of points, as the lady Trojans found a groove in the Oxford diamond, adding two in the first; one in the second; and three in the third – for the 6-3 lead heading into the fourth inning.
That is when Oxford marched on back – cashing in on a wild six-run inning to once again claim the lead in the back and forth action.
However, it is well known that the turtle wins the race over the rabbit – and that is similar to what Greene did to ensure the late win.
Oxford scored in bunches, having only three innings where scores came home. However, Greene was able to score every single inning – out hitting Oxford 18 to 8 on the night – and resulting in an eventual win over Oxford at 11-9.
Taking the win for Greene was sophomore Hannah Ludolph who stood on the mound and pitched to freshman catcher Lexi Kohlhepp – tossed out two strikeouts with seven walks.
Allison Beckwith was marked with the loss on the night for Oxford, as she pitched to the tune of a seven strikeout game, with just three walks.
It truly was McKenna Sergi, snagging a three-hit game, including a double and triple, who helped lead Greene to their first win of the season.
“I’m very happy with our defensive performance today especially since it was our second time outside,” said Greene head coach Rick Smith. “Also, pleasantly surprised with the performances of our sophomore pitcher and freshman catcher. The future could be very exciting.”
Greene (1-0 overall) will play next at Unatego on Thursday, April 6, at 4:30 p.m., while Oxford (0-1 overall), will play at Hancock on Thursday, April 6, at 4:30 p.m.
