NORWICH – It’s likely assumed that the Purple Tornado baseball team would certainly like to have their home-opener back, as the Tornado defense gave up nine runs in the top of the seventh inning to the reigning section IV class B champion Saints in a 15-0 loss on opening day.
The Saints plated their first run of the game in the first inning, and followed with another three runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth.
Purple Tornado starting pitcher Mike Trevisani, threw the first five innings of play exiting the game having thrown 83 pitches- 43 for strikes, giving ups six runs totally and five earned runs on six hits and four walks.
The new Tornado pitcher Cristobal Caballero had a quiet sixth inning, before exiting the game after giving up six earned runs in the seventh. Freshmen Eli Rodriguez did his best to stop the bleeding, giving up three runs in his outing on the mound – none of which were earned.
As for the rest of Tornado defensive platoon, it did no favors for their hurlers as the defense gave up six errors, two of which came in the top of the seventh.
Chris Jeffrey and JT Vinal provided the lone bright spots in the Tornado offense with Vinal going 1 for 3 recording his first varsity hit with a single and Jeffrey went 1 for 3 as well, recording a double for his first hit of the season.
To their credit, the Saint’s offense and defensive units nearly had the perfect game. Comfortably controlling all of the important facades of the game.
Seton recorded 11 hits, nine walks and two stolen bases for 15 runs on the offensive end and on defense, it just got better for the visitors.
Starting pitcher Mason Vaughn recorded 10 strike outs, while giving up one hit and a walk in five innings on the afternoon. Relief pitcher Tanner Sinicki pitched nearly flawlessly in the victory giving up one hit in two innings pitched.
“The last inning killed us,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull, “I wasn’t really overly upset defensively, I thought we made good plays, despite our errors.”
Norwich (0-1 overall) travels to Windsor on Wednesday April 5, for a showdown with the Black Knights at 4:30 p.m. – weather permitting.
