Observing Public Health Week in Chenango County
CHENANGO COUNTY – In urging county residents to engage in activities that serve to improve the health of the community at a local level, the Chenango County Board of Supervisors have passed a proclamation naming April 3 through April 9 to be Public Health Week in Chenango County.
The proclamation, signed by Chenango County Board of Supervisors Chairman Lawrence N. Wilcox on March 13, aligns Chenango County’s Public Health Week with National Public Health Week.
This year’s National Public Health Week theme is Healthiest Nation 2030 – an effort which endeavors to make the United States the world’s healthiest nation in one generation.
The theme stems from a notion stated in the Chenango County Board of Supervisors’ proclamation, “...when compared with other high-income countries, the United States has higher rates of poverty, and poorer outcomes on most measures of health, from infant mortality to obesity and chronic disease.”
In order to accomplish said feat, the proclamation notes that health must become a priority in all policies – from housing, education, and income, to community design, transportation, and the environment – both locally and nationally.
The focus of the nation, according to the proclamation, should henceforth be emphasizing wellness and prevention first, as opposed to just the treatment of sickness and disease.
In declaring April 3 through April 9 Public Health Week in Chenango County, the proclamation notes, “The Chenango County Health Department engages with a broad range of county, community, and regional partners to support efforts that promote equity and improve the economic, physical, and social environments that affect everyone’s health within the Chenango community.”
“All residents [are urged] to engage in activities and take actions that improve the health of our community,” concludes the proclamation.
