Buchek leads Black Knights to win over Tornado

WINDSOR – After a 15 run loss on Monday, it would be understandable for the Purple Tornado varsity baseball team to pack it in as they went on the road to play Windsor in less than desirable playing conditions.
But that wasn’t the case as the purple-clad diamond men motivated by an unquenchable will to win the ballgame and a refusal to let the game get taken away, the Tornado hung tough against a Black Knights squad that called upon their ace and arguably the best pitcher in STAC; Tim Buchek to pitch-resulting in the final four innings of no-hit baseball. And just how impressive was Buchek? He recorded 11 K’s out of the 12 remaining outs.
Norwich senior Nate Scheer held his own in his debut game from an injury that had kept him off the diamond for nearly a year, giving up three runs in the third inning – two earned over three innings of work.
Scheer struck out seven of the 17 batters he faced as he took the loss on the afternoon. Marcus Cashman entered the game in relief, putting up goose-eggs in both the fourth and fifth innings to keep Norwich within striking range. Cashman’s two run hiccup to start off the sixth, saw Chris Jeffrey take to the mound to salvage the inning and keep the game 5-0 heading into the final frame.
Unfortunately for Norwich, it wasn’t in the cards.
Overall, Norwich played a clean game and accomplished a complete 180 degree turn-around from their first outing this year, only committing one error on the afternoon – compared to their six errors in their prior showing.
In addition to their improved defensive play, the Tornado doubled their number of hits in this game – recording four hits. All of which were singles recorded by varsity newcomers – Cashman, Dashawn King, AJ Little and Mike Trevisani.
“They (Windsor) were able to capitalize on their opportunities by stringing a few hits together. (Windsor) made good plays at the plate to produce runs,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull. “We forced a team to throw the best pitcher in the league against us, and that doesn’t usually happen... I’m happy about the way we played and we have a lot to build on.”
The Purple Tornado (0-2) return to the diamond on Friday April 7, when they travel to Johnson City to take on the Wildcats – weather permitting.
