Norwich Purple Tornado tennis sinks to 0-2 to start the new season

CONKLIN – The young Norwich boys varsity tennis team had nigh hopes coming into the week, however, two matches later and a 6-1 thrashing from Susquehanna Valley has now landed the team at 0-2.
Out of the possible seven match points available on Wednesday, April 5, Norwich was only able to secure one – coming by way of the Tornado’s second doubles team. It was Jahlil Jones and Zac Marsh of Norwich who ensured Norwich avoided the shutout on Wednesday, when they dropped Sus. Valley’s Connor Gorman and Nick Merrell – having t push the match to a score of 7-5, and 7-5 to take the point.
Norwich saw three of the remaining six points fall to the wayside by way of straight set losses, all in the singles play.
Cody Jacobs defeated Norwich’s Zayn Harper at second singles, taking two sets from Harper for the 6-1, 6-2 win.
Third singles saw a slightly elevated matchup, however, the Sabers Dusty Root would eventually earn the win in straight sets over Joel Fazio by a score of 6-4, and 6-4.
Norwich’s Matt Giglio fell at fourth singles to SV’s Mason Spottek – dropping the match 6-0, and 6-2. Norwich’s most competitive set at the singles, came in the first singles match between Josh Nichols of SV and Josia Shaver. Shaver pushed the Sabers top tennis player to a third set but would drop the tie-breaker – losing in the match by scores of 4-6, 6-3, and 6-4.
Despite the win for the Tornado at second doubles, it was the two remaining doubles duo’s that gave SV a run for their money – taking both matches to extra sets. At first doubles, Ivan Gates and Daniel Sheridan of Susquehanna Valley defeated Austin Benenati and Carson Maynard in three sets – 6-4, 2-6, and 6-2.
At third doubles, Kyle Levergne and Evan Salisbury of SV defeated Norwich’s Nathan Christopherson and Ayden Hager 7-6, 6-2, with a tie-breaker set of 9-7.
Norwich, now 0-2 overall, will now have earned some time off to regroup before their next match at Oneonta, on Monday, April 10, at 4 p.m.
Notably, Susquehanna Valley moves to 2-0 following their home win over Norwich.
