Greene student celebrated by school and American Heart Association
GREENE – Greene Intermediate School fourth grader Savannah Nowalk was lauded at a school Jump Rope for Heart assembly Friday morning, April 7, for accomplishing the feat of becoming the top Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser at Greene Intermediate School this year.
Savannah–who was last year’s top fundraiser as well–raised more than $1,100 this year in honor of her Great Aunt Doris and her Grandma Nowalk.
Jump Rope for Heart, an annual fundraising event hosted by schools across the nation that’s facilitated by the American Heart Association (AHA), serves to teach students how physical fitness benefits the heart while also promoting volunteering as a fun and positive experience for everyone involved.
Other students partook at the assembly to share their own personal reasons for why they choose to take part in fundraising for Jump Rope for Heart, and why they believe heart health is important to them.
According to the AHA, the need to educate children on the need for regular physical activity is of utmost importance today.
According to recent studies cited by AHA, about one-third of children ages two-to-19 are considered overweight and obese on the spectrum in America.
Heart disease and stroke, according to the AHA, are America’s number one and number five killers respectively, and lack of physical fitness is a contributing factor.
Jump Rope for Heart is one venue that the AHA hopes to use to combat diseases caused by obesity.
