WHITNEY POINT – Wednesday, April 5, proved to be a great day for the Bainbridge-Guilford varsity baseball team. In their first game of the new season, they ventured to Whitney Point, and came away with an emphatic 12-1 victory.
The Bobcat bats were ringing in the first inning, as the team erupted for six runs.
“We sent 10 guys to the plate. They had a lefty on the mound, and our kids were just teeing off on him,” said B-G head coach Jim Mosher.
The Bobcats kept up their strong offense prowess throughout the game, as they tacked on a run in each of the next four innings to jump out to a 9-0 lead after four innings.
B-G’s pitchers were also on fire. The combination of Collin Puerille, Trevor Halaquist and Sean Jones notched 13 total strikeouts while allowing just three walks. Jones gave up the only run of the game to the opposition in the final inning.
“Our pitching was outstanding,” said coach Mosher. “Our goal was two or less errors, and we ended with one error for the game. I’m very pleased with the way we ran the bases, (and) very pleased with the way we hit for our first game.”
Trevor Halaquist was the star of the game for B-G, as along with his stellar pitching performance, he also went three-for-five at the plate, recording two RBI’s and scoring three runs. Sophomore Evan Hyzer went two-for-five on the day, scoring a run in his team’s win.
“Overall, I couldn’t ask for a better start,” said Mosher.
