BAINBRIDGE – Brent Rideout stepped away a hero for the Bainbridge-Guilford varsity baseball team on Monday, April 10, as he drove in the winning run for his side against Unatego in the bottom of the seventh inning, to clinch a crucial win.
In what was a tightly contested game from start to finish, Unatego took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning.
B-G were held without a hit until the fourth inning – in part due to superb pitching from Unatego’s star pitcher – Seth Burnham a four year varsity player who secured 12 strikeouts in the contest.
The Bobcats were able to break out, and tie the game on a two run scoring single from Austin Carr – moving the game to 2-2.
Neither team budged an inch for the rest of the game, until Rideout drove in the winning run for his side in the dying embers of the game.
“I thought we were headed for extra innings,” said B-G head coach Jim Mosher with regard to Unatego’s pitcher, Burnham, being ejected in the sixth inning due to the use of profanity at the plate, a move that proved to be the spark for the Bobcats.
“My kids made some plays when they had to, and they held tough. It was a great character win for us,” said coach Mosher.
Despite going just one-for-three at the plate on the day, Rideout’s hit proved decisive, and he was the star for B-G. Carr finished two-for-three on the day, and accounted for the other two Bobcat runs in the important victory.
“(It was a) very well pitched game by both teams, a great pitcher’s duel,” said Mosher. “It was a huge win for our kids, a big confidence builder.”
B-G saw Pete Ouimet stand on the mound in the game, where he reached the 100 pitch count. Ouimet grabbed nine strikeouts, one walk and only allowed two hits in the first six innings – before Trevor Halaquist came in in relief, tagging on an additional strikeout.
Next up for Bainbridge-Guilford (2-0 overall) they will play home against Delhi on Tuesday, April 11, at 4:30 p.m.
