Hancock defeats Sherburne-Earlville baseball 11-0

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville varsity baseball was coming off a hot 1-0 start – following their season-opener where they defeated Clinton 7-1 on Monday – however, after the excitement of the victory to start the season, fate reversed itself, handing the S-E boys a gut wrenching 11-0 loss to Hancock.
The home game for S-E against Hancock, Tuesday, April 11, saw the Marauders get outhit on their home diamond 11 to three.
“Hancock is a very good baseball team in all areas of the game. We made a few errors that they capitalized on early and never recovered,” said S-E head coach Jay Tackabury. “They (Hancock) are well coached and a fundamental baseball team. They were simply better than us tonight.”
S-E would have three errors in the game in comparison to Hancock’s none – as Hancock jumped to a 6-0 lead by the end of the fifth inning.
Taking the win for Hancock, was their starting pitcher Joe Gross – while S-E’s Trevor May pitched the first four innings (two strikeouts, four hits) before Ben Osborne came in in relief to snag two more strikeouts in the final two innings.
The S-E pitchers led the way at the plate, as Ben Osborne was 2-3, and Trevor May was 1-2.
Next up for S-E baseball (1-1 overall), they will play a double-header in Sidney, starting at 11 a.m. On Saturday, April 15.

Greene defeats Walton baseball 5-4

WALTON – The Greene Trojans varsity baseball team has been busy this week, having already played two games – splitting in their outcomes.
In the first matchup, played on Monday, April 10, Greene traveled to Walton to take on the Warriors in what turned out to be a tight game, however Walton would succumb to the Trojan bats, resulting in a final score of 5-4 in favor of Greene.
Greene would managed to string together their nine total hits in an effort which saw them secure the win in the seventh inning – outscoring the Warriors 2-1 in the final stretch.
Greene would employ Brandyn Scott, Logan Kennedy, and Nick Shoemaker as pitchers in the game – with Shoemaker taking the game for the win with six strikeouts. Walton would also see three pitchers contribute to the game, with Joseph Wambor taking the loss, with Kyle Wright contributing and Bailey Wood tossing out six strikeouts.
Errors played heavily in the loss, as Walton committed six to Greene’s mere one.

Afton defeats Greene baseball 8-3

AFTON – Following the 5-4 win on Monday, the Trojans traveled over the hill to take on the Crimson Knights of Afton on Tuesday, April 11 – resulting in a 8-3 Afton win.
Afton, now 2-0 on the season ripped into the unsuspecting Trojans early and often – resulting in a 7-0 lead by the end of the second inning.
Brandyn Scott of Greene would take the loss (one strikeout), however, would only pitch one inning before Noah Kennedy (two innings, two strikeouts, one walk), and Alec Frair (three innings, four strikeouts, three walks), would come in in relief.
On the Afton mound, Colin Nabinger would command his way to the win, pitching five innings to the tune of a seven strikeout game.
Greene would find the scoreboard in the third inning – grabbing one run, taking the game to 7-1 at the time – but would fail to bring home any more runners until the sixth and seventh innings.
Afton’s seven hits would not be out done by their four errors – as Greene was unable to keep pace with the Crimson Knights due to their just five hits and three errors.
Mitchell Mertz (2-4, 2 RBI’s, 1 run), Vince Caiati (1-2, 3 runs) Colin Nabinger (2-4, 2 runs), and Mikey Greven-Briggs (1-3, 1 run) would lead the way for Afton.
Greene would enjoy solid at bats from Brandyn Scott (2-3, 2 RBI’s, 1 run), Nick Shoemaker (1-2, 1 1 run), and Noah Kennedy and Alec Frair – 1-3 a piece.
Next up for Greene, they are scheduled to travel to Unatego on Saturday, April 15, at 11 a.m. – while Afton (2-0 overall), will play home against Unadilla Valley on Monday, April 17, at 4:30 p.m.

Otselic Valley defeats Poland baseball 7-3

POLAND – The OV Vikings traveled to Poland for their season-opener, coming away with a solid 7-3 win over the home team.
OV saw solid days at the plate from Titus Reichard (2-3 with 2 RBI’s), Garrett Forrest (1-4), Justin Graham (1-2, 1 run).
Despite the road win to start the 2017 season, OV saw themselves in a hole early, as Poland looked to defend their home diamond with a two run first inning.
Despite the 2-0 deficit, OV would settle down and battle back to take the lead following a powerful fourth inning where the Vikings sent home four runners.
Taking the win on the mound for OV was Justin Graham (four innings, three strikeouts, 8 walks) before CJ Haitian was inserted to clean up the game (three innings, four strikeouts, four walks).
Patrick Mahoney of Poland struck out 11 OV batters in his attempt for the home win, however, the opportunistic Vikings would come away the victors – a major contributing factor to the Poland loss was the five errors committed compared to OV who committed just one in the game.
Next up for Otselic Valley (1-0 overall), they will travel to McGraw on Thursday, April 13, at 4 p.m.

Greene defeats Walton softball 15-11

WALTON – The lady Trojans of Greene traveled with the Greene baseball team to Walton on Monday, April 10, where they successfully handed Walton a 15-11 loss.
The MAC matchup, saw Walton now drop to 0-2 on the new year, as
Makenna Sergi and Brook Castle both saw their time at the plate result in a double for Greene – which also saw their starting pitcher Chrissy Boeltz snag two strikeouts in the win – Tiff Johns would see time pitching for Greene as well.
Riley McAdams took the loss for Walton, while Carissa Crandall and Sam Taddeo each came in in relief of McAdams – who saw her time on the mound result in three strikeouts.
Greene showed power late in the game, to ensure the road win – as they outscored Walton 10-6 in the final three innings, with a four run seventh inning.
Next up for Greene Softball, they will play home against Harpursville on Monday, April 17, at 4:30 p.m.

Cincinnatus defeats Otselic Valley softball 26-11

OTSELIC – The lady Vikings of Otselic Valley saw an explosion of offense sweep them off their feet this past Monday, April 10, when Cincinnatus ran away with a high scoring league matchup to start the new season.
OV would secure the first runs in the game – and looked to be in a good spot early – tagging in five runs in just the first innings. However, Cincy saw the outcome quite differently, as seven runs to their side came in the second inning.
The two teams would exchange blows in the third inning – four runs for OV, six runs for Cincinnatus – however, that is when the steam seemed to run out for the lady Vikings.
“Seventh grader Grace Costa led the offensive effort for the Vikings, going 2-4 at the plate. Madison Davis, Amber Meigs, and Alexis Hazzard each contributed with one hit,” said Otselic Valley’s head coach Molly Shepherd. “Whitney Hamlin led the team on the pitchers mound with relief help from Jolanda Ponce. Hamlin recorded three strikeouts. McKenzie Kampe did a great job behind the plate.”
Despite the semi-close affair in the early innings, Cincinnatus proved to be too much with their hitting prowess, recording 14 hits in the game when compared to OV’s five.
Cincinnatus would continue to pour on the runs in the fourth inning, sending a massive 11 runners home – while OV could only manage two runs in their efforts to stop the bleeding.
The game was called in the fifth inning after Cincinnatus claimed two additional runs, drawing the final score to 26-11.
Otselic Valley (0-1 overall), will see their next action on Thursday, April 13, when they travel to McGraw at 4 p.m.
