County health department celebrates 75 years of service
NORWICH – The Chenango County Health Department celebrated its 75th anniversary of operation during National Public Health Week last week, April 3 to 9 – an annual observance in the first week of April recognizing the value of public health.
In addition to being the nation’s public health week, the Chenango County Board of Supervisors issued a proclamation deeming April 3 to 9, 2017, Chenango County’s Public Health Week.
An open house event was held on April 7 in the County Board of Supervisors’ room in commemorating the county health department’s 75 years of service.
A re-dedication ceremony was held at the open house to honor the late William Little, MD, who founded the Chenango County Nursing Service in 1942.
The Chenango County Nursing Service has since grown into what is today the Chenango County Health Department.
Dr. William Little was a physician from Sherburne who lived from 1866 to 1948. The plaque was originally dedicated to Dr. Little in June 1962.
Exhibits at the event also displayed a timeline depicting the history of the Chenango County Health Department from inception including: Nursing, Emergency Preparedness, Environmental Health, Code Enforcement, and Special Children’s Services Divisions.
“The Chenango County Health Department engages with a broad range of county, community, and regional partners to support efforts that promote equity and improve the economic, physical and social environments that affect everyone’s health in the county,” states a release on behalf of the Chenango County Health Department. “We urge all residents to engage in activities and to take actions that improve the health of our community.”
It’s reported that over 80 local dignitaries attended to event.
