NORWICH – A costly forfeit due to the long spring break vacation saw Norwich’s varsity tennis team give way to the Chenango Forks Blue Devils by a score of 4-3.
The divisional showdown between Norwich and Forks saw a tough fought matchup throughout – however, losing 4-3 to a divisional rival due to a forfeited spot at second doubles essentially handed the Blue Devils the win. A tough loss to swallow for a young up-and-coming Norwich team.
“Tonight’s match, tough loss. Our guys at one and two played tough, but Forks were just better tonight at those positions,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart. “Joel (Fazio) had a great showing at three singles, Matt (Giglio) won a three-setter. First doubles played solid. We will have a good shot at them next time we play.”
Chenango Forks looked to dominate from the get-go, with two straight wins at first and second singles. At first singles Aidan Houlihan shot down Norwich’s Josiah Shaver in straight sets for the 6-4 6-2 win. Niklas Boeker earned the win over Zayne Harper at second singles with a straight set win of 6-3 and 6-1.
Norwich ripped off two wins to close out the singles play, as Joel Fazio downed Declan Houlihan in straight sets at 6-2, 6-1; all while Norwich’s Matt Giglio at fourth singles defeated Jared Hopkins in a heated three set matchup, which saw Giglio pull ahead for the needed team point at 6-3, 4-6, and 6-0
Norwich’s lone doubles win came from their top doubles duo of Austin Benenati and Jahlil Jones when they cruised to a showing of 6-2 and 6-1 to defeat Konnor Brown and Josh Wheelock.
A forfeit to Forks at second doubles, followed by a costly shutout loss at third doubles when the Blue Devils Aaron Pixley and Patrick Saroka defeated Ayden Hager and Nathan Christopherson at 6-0 and 6-0 – landed Norwich at their final team score of 4-3.
We needed to win one of the two singles matches to get the fourth point and we couldn’t get it done,” said coach Stewart. “We had solid play from Joel (Fazio) and Matt (Giglio), and first doubles Austin (Benenati) and Jahlil (Jones).”
Norwich (1-3 overall), will see their next action come on Tuesday, April 18, when the Purple Tornado host Chenango Valley at 4 p.m.
