Wednesday night baseball and softball recap
Seton Catholic downs Norwich baseball 12-4
BINGHAMTON – The Norwich Purple Tornado varsity baseball team and their first night game of the season – the emotion was high, the excitement was there when Norwich rematched Seton Catholic on Wednesday night.
A game which has continued the trend for the Purple bats since their home-opener fiasco, a trend of better play each time they step back out for an additional game.
In the home-opener in early April, Norwich surrendered nine runs in the final inning to cap off a 15-0 loss to none other than Seton Catholic. Fast forward to Wednesday, April 12, and Norwich still suffered the loss to the Saints, however, battled to a much better scoreline of 12-4.
“We played well and competed, probably the best I have seen Dylan (Mack) pitch, we just weren’t good in relief tonight,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull. “A big improvement from the first time we played them (Seton) when we lost 15-0.”
Four innings into the contest and Norwich trailed the Saints by only one run – following an impressive showing from the Tornado in the second inning when they sent four in for the tying run at that time. Seton tacked on an additional run in the third for the 5-4 lead.
Despite a solid start to the game, Norwich would suffer another late game collapse resulting in the final score of 12-4. Seton rallied their troops, as the Saints marched to a seven run inning in the fifth – Norwich was never able to send another runner home.
Pitching for Norwich and taking the loss was Dylan Mack – who secured a solid outing with four innings pitched, seven strikeouts, and five walks. Relief pitchers was the issue as Turnbull alleged, Marcus Cashman, Mike Trevisani and Cristobal Caballero combined for the final three innings, gaining only one strikeout (Caballero), allowing five walks combined and a hit a piece – all resulting in three runs for the Saints.
The Seton pitchers were led by Peter Hartrick (four innings, eights strikeouts).
Seton would managed to outhit Norwich 12-4 in the game, as Cody Malyszek led the way going 4-4 with two runs, followed by Zach Pruden going 3-4 with two runs and two RBI’s.
Norwich was led in the loss by Dashawn King, who finished the game 2-3 with a run, as well as Marcus Cashman 1-2 with three RBI’s.

Seton sinks Norwich for second time 6-5
NORWICH - Seton Catholic have proved a nemesis for the Norwich varsity softball team early in this 2017 season. The Saints narrowly defeated the purple tornado for the second time this season, on a final score of 6-5.
Even though Norwich had almost triple the amount of hits than the opposition – eight to three – errors proved costly for the Tornado.
Seton scored all of their six runs as a result of either one of the five errors that Norwich committed throughout the game, or the seven walks given up by Tornado pitching.
The Tornado will be hoping to clean up some of their defense errors when they play host to Windsor on Thursday, Apr. 13. First pitch in that game is slated for 4:45 p.m.

Oxford Baseball gets throttled by Walton Warriors 19-2
OXFORD – The promising play thus far into the 2017 was all washed away when Oxford’s varsity baseball club was ripped apart by the ruthless Walton Warriors on Wednesday, April 12, as Walton came to Oxford only to leave with a 19-2 win.
12 hits, that is how many more hits the Warriors had in the game, as they attacked the ball all game long en route to a 17 hit, 19 run, one error performance.
On the other side, Oxford managed just two runs off their five hits in the game – a major contributor to the lack of runs... their nine errors in the game.
It was in fact Oxford’s Brad Beckwith who helped Oxford impressively jump on the scoreboard first in the game, when he smacked a single to right field. This single allowed Austin Crawford to run home from third base.
Walton had seen enough, they trailed Oxford 1-0 entering the second inning and they did not like that.
That is when Oxford essentially won the game, burying the Blackhawks to the tune of an eight run second inning.
The fight had not been strangled out of the Blackhawks at this point, despite the huge 8-1 hole they now were in. Oxford responded with yet another play by the duo of Beckwith and Crawford.
Down 10-2 – Walton scored two more runs in the top of the third – Brad Beckwith found his pitch once again and smacked another fly ball single to right field, allowing Crawford to make it home, this time from second base.
That was it for the Blackhawks, as their offense sputtered the remainder of the game – and Walton went to work at the bats sending in nine more runs – four in the sixth and seventh.
Oxford saw Beckwith finish 2-2 with two RBI’s, Crawford finished 0-2 with two walks and two runs, Dylan Depew finished 2-3, and Josh Christian finished 1-3.
The Oxford pitchers – Jon Heggie, Matt Roach, Levi Bennett, and Josh Christian – combined for just five strikeouts and eight walks. Walton would see Bailey Wood take the win going three innings and securing five strikeouts, before Austin Ladd came in for four innings, snagging two additional strikeouts.
Next up for Oxford, (0-3-1 overall), they will see their next action when they travel to Delhi on Thursday, April 13, at 4:30 p.m.
