Free rabies clinic to be held in Guilford on Wednesday
GUILFORD – A free rabies clinic will take place at the Town of Guilford Garage on Wednesday, April 19 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Per the New York State Public Health Rabies Law, all dogs, cats, and domesticated ferrets are required to receive immunization against rabies no later than 4 months of age, and NYS Ag and Markets requires dogs to be licensed no later than 4 months of age.
Attendees are asked that their animals be under control at the clinic: dogs must be on a lease, and cats should be transported in a box or crate. Attendees are also asked to bring previous vaccination records to verify their pet is eligible for 3-year coverage.
Rabies immunization is important for a number of reasons. In the event that a dog, cat, or ferret is not vaccinated against rabies and is involved in biting an individual, the Public Health Law requires the animal to be confined for 10 days at an approved facility at the owner's expense. If the animal is vaccinated however, it may be confined for the 10 day period at home.
If your animal is bitten by or exposed to a rabid or suspected rabid animal and is currently immunized, a vaccine booster dose must be administered within 5 days. If unvaccinated however, the animal must be adequately quarantined at an approved facility for 6 months in accordance with the Public Health Law.
