Chenango Valley Baseball defeats Norwich 6-3
BINGHAMTON – The Norwich varsity baseball squad has now slid to an 0-6 record following their latest loss to the Chenango Valley Warriors on Tuesday, April 18.
Chenango Valley – who is now on a three game win streak – strung together a solid game on Tuesday, where they pulled off the 6-3 win over the Tornado.
“We had a lot of fight tonight but just not enough,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull. “Proud of the guys, we are getting better every inning we play.”
Following a first inning run, Norwich found themselves in the drivers seat in the top of the fourth after driving in two runs to take the 2-1 lead over the Warriors.
Mike Trevisani slammed a hard single to right field, allowing JT Vinal to scamper home for the tying run. Following Trevisani’s at-bat, Brandon Barnes hits a ground ball toward the CV shortstop. A fielders choice situation, JT Vinal was tagged out at second – while AJ Little of Norwich sprinted home for the second run of the inning.
Things were looking up for the Tornado. The Warriors responded like a team who has battled to a winning record on the season.
Chenango Valley drove in three answering runs in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim the lead – a lead which they did not surrender the remainder of the game.
Norwich claimed one additional run in the fifth inning – when JT Vinal hit a single to right field, an error on the play allowed Dashawn King to to advance to third and eventually home, after already successfully stealing second base.
CV saw Pat Giblin pitch five innings with three strikeouts and three walks – as well as Jackson Retzlaff pitch two innings with two strikeouts and three walks.
Norwich saw Nate Scheer take the loss with a five strikeout six walk game in 4.2 innings, with Marcus Cashman adding one inning with a strikeout and a walk, and Eli Rodriguez pitch .1 inning with one strikeout.
Mike Trevisani finished 2-3 with and RBI as Norwich’s top batter.
Next up for Norwich (0-6 overall), they will play home against Chenango Forks at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19.

Unatego Baseball defeats Sherburne-Earlville 8-0
UNATEGO – The Sherburne-Earlville Marauders added another loss to the season on Tuesday, April 18, when they traveled to Unatego to take on the Spartans.
Unatego bounced S-E from the field with a 8-0 home win for the Spartans, as they valiantly defended their diamond.
“Trevor pitched very well tonight, our offense didn’t help him out,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Jay Tackabury. “We have to play good defense as well. Every game we’re learning, we just have to put it all together.”
Trevor May stood on the mound taking the loss for S-E as he battled with the Unatego batters for four and two thirds innings – tossing four strikeouts in his efforts. Cody Beckwith came in as a relief pitcher, gaining no strikeouts in the road loss.
Unatego jumped to a nice 2-0 start following a two-hit second inning. The Spartans recorded hits in four of the six innings they were at the plate, amassing a seven hit game. Adding in a four run sixth inning, truly poured the salt on the wound for S-E.
S-E would battle, playing a clean game of baseball with only one error – however, would only manage one hit in the game. Kyle Cole would finish 1-2 on the day, with his hit in the first inning of play.
McAdams of Unatego recorded nine strikeouts in the win, pitching the entirety of the game.
Next up for Sherburne-Earlville (1-3 overall), they are scheduled for a home game against Adirondack on Friday, April 21, at 4:30 p.m.

Deposit-Hancock and Afton Baseball defeat Unadilla Valley, at 14-3 and 7-5
HANCOCK – The Storm of Unadilla Valley have slumped to a mark of 0-2-1 after playing three games thus far into the season.
On Monday, April 17, the Crimson Knights of Afton secured a 7-5 home win over UV. After a 2-2 mark following an exciting opening inning, the bats cooled for the Storm. Afton took the 5-2 lead following a three-run third inning.
The third inning proved the difference maker in the matchup, as Unadilla Valley actually would outscore Afton down the stretch – 3-2 from the fourth inning until the completion of the game.
“We had a couple errors that led to their runs in a couple of innings,” said Unadilla Valley head coach Matt Osborne. “We left too many guys stranded on the bases in the sixth and seventh innings.”
UV would find themselves outhit in the game by a margin of 8-3, however, would tie the game at 5-5 at the top of the fifth inning and would pull withing two runs in the final inning.
Colby Moore would finish as UV’s top-hitter going 2-3 with an RBI and a run on the night, while Afton’s Keith Ives finished 3-4 with an RBI and a run.
Afton (3-0 overall), is scheduled to play home against Deposit-Hancock on Friday, April 21, at 4:30 p.m.

Following the loss to Afton on Monday, Unadilla Valley was afforded no down time, as they immediately turned right around and traveled to played Deposit-Hancock – a game which would offer no breaks for the Storm.
Unadilla Valley was buried by the offensive prowess of Deposit-Hancock as the Storm was out hit 12-4 on the night.
Although UV would earn the first run of the game, coming in the first inning when Jared White hit a sacrifice allowing Payton Stirone to score on the play – they would find their lead short-lived.
After two short innings, Deposit-Hancock was on top 6-1. Following a six-run fourth inning – hope was bleak for a struggling UV team.
UV employed three pitchers in the game – Andrew Jackson (no walks, no strikeouts), Cameron Osborne (one walk, one strikeout), and Adam Lamont (no walks, two strikeouts) – as each pitcher pitched 1.2 innings.
Taking the win for Deposit-Hancock was Luke Resti who pitched 2.2 innings snagging four strikeouts and allowing four walks. Levi Wormuth came in following Resti and finished off the game with six strikeouts and one walk.
Next up for Unadilla Valley (0-2-1 overall), they will play home against Greene on Wednesday, April 19, at 4:30 p.m.

Harpursville Baseball defeats Greene 3-1
GREENE – Greene simply was out hit by the Harpursville Hornets on Monday, April 17.
Greene was able to take the early 1-0 lead over the Hornets after a first inning RBI from Brandyn Scott to send Nick Shoemaker home.
That was it for the Trojans, save two hits – one a piece for Breven Gilmore and Alec Frair.
The Trojans held the 1-0 lead until Harpursville saw Kashmar step to the plate to send in the only extra-base hit of the night – resulting in a 1-1 tie following the Harpursville run.
“We just couldn’t string them (hits) together, we got doubled off at first twice. They had three double plays on us,” said Greene head coach Ronald Rapp. “We just didn’t hit. It was a really windy night.”
Taking the win for Harpursville was Ross Gruber who pitcher all seven innings. While Alec Frair was given the loss on the night for Greene, as he snagged one strikeout and four walks.
Harpursville scored an additional run in the sixth and seventh innings of play to take the 3-1 win over Greene.
“Walks were how they got on base to score in the sixth and seventh,” said coach Rapp.
Next up for Greene Baseball, they will play on Wednesday, April 19, at Unadilla Valley at 4:30 p.m.

Bainbridge-Guilford Softball defeats Afton 3-1
AFTON – In one of the marque matchup of the varsity softball realm on Tuesday, April 18, Bainbridge-Guilford stunned the Afton Crimson Knights with a late game push to win 3-1.
“When we needed to capitalize we didn’t,” said Afton head coach Cindy Bostelman. “We made a couple mistakes and they (B-G) capitalized on a few things we did, and that’s how it turned out.”
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning Megan Palmatier stepped to the plate. Palmatier crushed a single – giving the lady Bobcats the spark they needed.
“I thought my girls played to win tonight,” said Bainbridge-Guilford head coach Randy Palmatier. “They stayed focused against a very good team, and a great coach.”
Palmatier provided the spark, a spark which provided Kassidy Davy enough power to find the ball, and with some luck on the lady Bobcats side, Davy reached first on a throwing error on Afton.
With a runner on second and first, Bree Barber proved to be the hero that B-G needed when she stepped to the plate and nailed a single deep to right field – Palmatier and Davy both scored on the play.
“It was all downhill from there,” said coach Bostelman. “We had every chance in the world.”
Palmatier finished the day 2-3 with a RBI single to tie the game in the fifth inning. Bree Barber finished the game 2-3 with two RBI’s to win the game.
Maddy Baciuska of Afton earned the lady Crimson Knights lone RBI on the night, when she smacked a first inning shot to send Amanda Greenwood home for the 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Taking the win for Bainbridge-Guilford on the mound was Kori Thornton who pitched the entire game – tossing eight strikeouts and allowing seven hits and three walks.
Amanda Greenwood was charged with the loss for Afton, as she also pitched the entire game, recording nine strikeouts, while allowing seven walks and five hits.
Both teams would leave eight runners on base throughout the tightly contested evening.
Next up for Bainbridge-Guilford (6-1 overall), they will play home against Harpursville on Wednesday, April 19, at 4:30 p.m.; while Afton (1-1 overall) will also play home on Wednesday, April 19, when they host Deposit-Hancock at 4:30 p.m.

Oxford Softball defeats Delhi 7-3
DELHI – The Oxford Blackhawks varsity softball team has marked April 18, in their calendars – as the struggling team was able to record their first win of the season with a 7-3 victory of Delhi.
The lady Blackhawks wasted no time in finding the scoreboard – sending home four runners in the very first inning.
14 hits, Oxford softball managed to key in on the pitching style of Delhi’s Silcox, who took the loss for the lady Bulldogs, recording five strikeouts with nine walks in the seven innings pitched.
Allison Beckwith earned the solid win on the night with her 11 strikeout, seven inning performance – while only allowing four walks and eight hits.
The Oxford ladies capitalized on big plays, never allowing more than one run per inning for Delhi – and to think that Oxford was actually the team that left more runners on base at 12-8 in the game.
Five batters for Oxford would record RBI’s – Rachel Tefft, Allison Beckwith, Jessie Howe, Karly Marshman and Lexi Kohlhepp snagging two.
With 14 hits in the game, six Oxford batters recorded hits – with Layla Kriz finishing 3-5 with a run and three stolen bases. Raigen Ehly was 2-2 with three walks and two runs scored, along with two stolen bases. Lexi finished 2-3 on the day.
Next up for Oxford (1-2 overall), they will travel to Sidney on Wednesday, April 19, at 4:30 p.m.

BINGHAMTON – Chenango Valley completed the sweep of the Norwich Purple Tornado with a big 16-4 win over Norwich’s softball team on Tuesday evening.
“Another tough game, lost 16-4 but hit the ball tonight,” said Norwich head coach Jim Sanford. “(We) made some improvements.”
Norwich’s offense recorded seven hits on the night – Airelle Jacquette leading the pack going 3-3 with a run scored.
However, despite the improved action at the plate for Norwich, the lady Tornado would fail to amount any sort of comeback in the game. Chenango Valley would manage to climb to a 7-1 lead by the end of the second inning. Norwich was unable to match a score until the floodgates opened in the final inning of play.
Down 9-1 heading into the fifth inning, Norwich impressively strung together a three-run inning. However, these floodgates were not all good, as the Warriors buried the Tornado with a seven run final inning to take the 16-4 win.
Norwich (0-6 overall), will play next against Chenango Forks at home on Wednesday, April 19, at 4:30 p.m.
Notably, this win over Norwich marked Chenango Valley’s first win of the season as they moved their record to 1-6 overall.
