UNATEGO – The Greene varsity softball team produced some late magic to clinch an important victory against Unatego on Thursday, April 20.
Going into the seventh and final inning, the Trojans were down by a run, but they managed to bust out two runs of their own, and hold off Unatego in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.
Greene found themselves in trouble early, as they went down 8-0 after just two innings. However, they rallied to score two runs in the third inning, and a massive seven runs in the fourth inning, edging out to a tight one-run lead.
Unatego mounted a comeback of their own, as they scored three runs in the fifth inning, and one in the sixth, but the Trojans pulled out the bats when it mattered most to secure the victory.
In what was an enthralling game from start to finish, McKenna Sergi and Alyssa Sands extended their hot streaks at the plate, with three and four hits each respectively.
But the hit that turned the tide in Greene’s favor came from Claire Moxley. Her double in the fourth inning helped to start the Trojan rally, driving in two runs.
Although they carved out a win, Greene (4-0 league) will be hoping their next matchup won’t be as closely contested. They host Delaware Academy High School next, on Friday, April 21. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., following the Friday matchup Greene will be traveling to Unadilla Valley on Saturday, for an 11 a.m. game with the UV Storm.
