Afton senior Amanda Greenwood commits to Roberts Wesleyan College

AFTON – The impressive high school student-athlete of Amanda Greenwood, has decided to further her athletic passion this coming fall of 2017, when she will be a Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawk.
From Crimson Knight to Redhawk – Greenwood has put in a combined 12 varsity seasons for Afton. Greenwood has notched five years of varsity level Indoor Track and Field, four years of Volleyball, and now is competing in her third year of varsity Softball.
“Academics are really important, academics really count,” said Greenwood recounting the focus she wishes she had a younger age on academics. “The school has my major, I am going for Physical Education.”
Immersing herself in the athletic realm, the soon-to-be undergrad has decided to major in what other than a major involving the sporting world. Greenwood is receiving athletic scholarships to play three sports as a freshman undergraduate.
Greenwood will be joining the Redhawk ranks for three sports – Volleyball, Indoor Track and Field, and Outdoor Track and Field.
“This is a big moment, signing this commitment for your future and the rest of your life,” said Afton’s head softball coach Cindy Bostelman, just prior to the signing. “This is a proud moment in women’s athletics.”
Greenwood officially signed her letter of intent on Wednesday, May 3, in the Afton High School Library.
Greenwood is joining some elite athletes in all three college sports, as RWC is coming off a 2016 Volleyball season where they finished 9-15 overall, but are now bringing in three freshman talents to bolster the roster. RWC Track and Field is coming off a season where they just recently claimed their third straight East Coast Conference title, as of Friday, April 22, 2017.
“I really like the size of the school. I won’t just be a number at Robert’s. I met with the volleyball coach. I really liked the team and the coach, the team is looking real good,” said Greenwood. “I really enjoy all three of my sports. Track and Volleyball are near the top, and that is why I am really excited to go for them.”
While at Afton, Greenwood held down the court in Volleyball – where her and her team managed a Section IV playoff first round win over Union-Springs in the 2016 Class C playoffs. Greenwood was named First Team All-Star in Volleyball for the 2014, 2015, and 2016 season – having 2016 stats of 209 kills, 111 digs, 26 blocks, and 67 aces.
Fast forward to the winter season and Greenwood managed to light up the track as a Crimson Knight sprinter.
The 2016-2017 Indoor Track and Field season saw Greenwood be named a team captain to which she then dominated the field of 300m runners – winning all of her races, until the New York State meet.
Greenwood finished first at the Section IV New York State Qualifier in the 300m, with a time of 42.40 seconds – only to better her time at states and finishing 17th overall with a time of 41.92 seconds.
Currently in the midst of the 2017 spring season, Greenwood stands on the mound in command of her Crimson Knights. Afton is currently ranked fourth in the MAC league (7-4 overall), and is scheduled to play their first game of the MAC league tournament come Tuesday, May 9, at 4:30 p.m. when they travel to Deposit for a shot at the MAC tournament crown.
“Softball season so far has been very exciting. We have a good team this year, and we are putting a lot of work in. We have a lot of young new kids coming in,” said Greenwood. “They are all working hard, being great backups for me, behind the mound. We are looking good, just hoping to pull a few more things together and really go out with a bang this season – especially for my senior year.”
