Tornado baseball see playoff hopes dashed

CONKLIN – The Purple Tornado varsity baseball team’s hopes of reaching the Section IV playoffs were dealt a big blow on Thursday. They were defeated by Susquehanna Valley on a final score of 3-0.
In what was a tightly contested game throughout, only a combined seven hits were given up in a pitchers duel.
Marcus Cashman was on the mound for Norwich. He gave up just four hits over six innings of work, but he allowed three runs in the first inning, and that proved to be the difference.
Max Hoffman provided Susquehanna Valley with five innings of stellar pitching, allowing just one hit, and striking out seven.
“Cashman got in a groove after the first inning, we just couldn’t get any offense going for him,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull following the loss. “We made a few running mistakes, and we couldn’t afford to do that against one of the top teams in the league.”
Austin Haskell was the arch nemesis of Norwich on the day, as he drove in two of his sides runs on a double, the defining hit of the game.
The Tornado will look to finish out the season strong. They will look to rebound from this loss when they host Johnson City this Friday, May 5, weather permitting. First pitch in that game is tentatively scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
