DELHI – It was another day on the diamond for the Oxford Blackhawks who picked up their third win on the season against the Delhi Bulldogs on Thursday May 4, advancing with the 5-3 win.
Despite the Blackhawks taking the lead early in the top of the first inning, they did not claim the lead for good until the third inning of play.
With the Bulldogs leading 2-1, Oxford uncorked two more runs to take the lead at 3-2. The Blackhawks managed to score again in the fifth and seventh innings, all while Oxford pitcher Austin Crawford blanked the hometown Bulldogs, not allowing a run until the bottom of the seventh.
Crawford picked up the victory on the day, going the distance throwing for all seven innings, allowing five hits, five walks and striking out eight Delhi batters in the process.
Offensively, it was the effort by Dylan Depew and Brad Beckwith that delivered the crucial plays that determined the game. Depew was perfect on the day, going 4-4 from the dish with a double and two triples in addition to scoring three runs, while driving in a run of his own for an RBI. Beckwith, despite going 1-3 on the afternoon, made his presence felt as he recorded three RBIs on the day.
Jon Heggie made his presence felt on the base paths, stealing two bases while knocking a double of his own.
The Oxford Blackhawks return to the diamond Monday, May 8, as they enter the Mid-State Athletic Conference tournament. Oxford, will face off against the Storm from Unadilla Valley in a win or go home match-up. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. in Oxford.
