OXFORD – The MAC League tournament brought together the likes of the Oxford Blackhawks and Unadilla Valley Storm – for a third matchup between the two rival baseball programs.
The third time is the charm, right? Not for the Storm of UV, as Oxford would use their pitching to help them stay in the game on the cold and windy Monday afternoon – taking the 8-6 win from UV.
It wasn’t all cut and dry in the game, as Unadilla Valley was able to secure 11 hits to Oxford’s seven, as the lead would change four times throughout the contest.
Taking the win for win on the mound for Oxford was Jon Heggie, who pitched four innings – striking out five UV batters, and walking four. Austin Crawford would finish the game off, striking out six batters and walking three.
Tied up at 3-3 after just two innings, UV looked to make the most of the MAC matchup they were afforded slamming in a run in the fourth inning to take the 4-3 lead. Jared White nailed a groud-out to shortstop – however, the move allowed speedster Payton Stirone to fly home from third base.
Oxford wasn’t done yet, and who else better at the plate currently than Dylan Depew. Oxford enjoyed a single from Depew, a fly ball which allowed Jon Heggie and Austin Crawford to both fly home, from the third and first base spots, respectively.
UV would go silent for two innings, and that was the ball game. In a last ditch effort the Storm attempted to rumble back into the game in the seventh inning with two runs, but it was too little, too late.
Oxford would have seven different batters record one hit a piece: Heggie 1-3 with a run, Crawford 1-3 with two runs, Depew 1-2 with a run and two RBI, Brad Beckwith 1-3 with two runs, Levi Bennett 1-1 with a run and an RBI, Nick Cirello 1-1 with an RBI, and Noah Robb 1-4 with a run.
Unadilla Valley saw a much different setup in their 11 run effort at the plate – Payton Stirone earned the hot bat going 3-4 with a run, followed by Adam Lamont 2-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Colby Moore 2-4 with two runs and an RBI. Jared White, Timmy Postma, Cameron Osborne, and Jacob Grant each added one hit.
With a win over UV in the MAC league tournament, Oxford advances to take on the Trojans of Greene. Oxford plays next in Greene, on Tuesday, May 9, at 4:30 p.m. Unadilla Valley taking the loss, effectively moves their record to 0-11-1, as they need to schedule a game with Greene for the MAC league tournament 9-12 bracket.
