BAINBRIDGE – In the midst of their best softball season in school history – holding a record of 15-1 overall, and officially being ranked 14th in New York State for Class C schools – the dangerous Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats defeated Hancock 10-0 to advance to the finals.
Easily defeating Hancock on Tuesday, May 9, in the semifinals of the MAC league tournament was simply step one to their goal of becoming MAC tournament champions – however, a tall task of playing defending New York State Champion Deposit awaits. Notably, Deposit is responsible for the lady Bobcats lone loss on the season.
For the time-being, a 10-0 win will have to suffice the hungry bats of B-G, who racked up a massive 14 hits against Hancock off of 32 at-bats.
“The girls were really ready to play tonight. They really made me proud of them,” said Bainbridge-Guilford head coach Randy Palmatier.
Taking the win for the lady Bobcats was Kori Thornton. Thornton pitched 6.1 innings of the game, striking out seven batters and walking just four – better yet, limiting the Hancock bats to just three hits in the game. Alli Miller would finish out the game, pitching two additional strikeouts.
Bainbridge-Guilford attacked early, striking for six runs in the first inning alone. It was smooth sailing from there on out, as the lady Bobcats added two runs in the second, before chipping in a run a piece in the third and fourth innings.
B-G would divvy up their hits pretty evenly across the board, as all but two players earned hits in the game. Leading the way for the lady Bobcats at the plate was Bree Barber who smashed home two home runs, in the process of going 3-4 at the plate with three runs and three RBI.
Megan Palmatier would smash home a home run of her own, finishing the day 2-4 with two runs and two RBI. Jillian Cannistra, Abbi Miller, and Kassidy Davy each finished with two hits a piece, as well.
Bainbridge-Guilford advances to the finals of the MAC league tournament to play at Deposit on Wednesday, May 10, at 4:30 p.m.

DEPOSIT – On the other side of the MAC league tournament, Deposit was faced with a competent Afton Crimson Knights squad who mentally avenged an earlier season loss at 9-0 – by limiting the defending state champions to just a 6-3 win.
“What a great game tonight,” said Afton head coach Cindy Bostelman of the effort. “We’re getting closer, it is a lot better than 9-0 in the first matchup.”
Deposit waisted little time in grabbing the win, sending four runners in for scores in the third inning. However, Afton wouldn’t break as easily as Deposit expected – Caleigh Stevens knocked a solid single to open up the fourth inning. Little did she know that two strikeouts later Makaela Mills would step to the plate to crush a long ball home run to score the duo. The score would move to 4-2 in favor of Deposit.
A home run, on star Deposit pitcher Makenzie Stiles is a rare feat which, despite the loss, Afton can walk away with.
Stiles was credited with the win on the day, pitching seven innings with 11 strikeouts. For Afton Amanda Greenwood would be credited with the loss, striking out eight Deposit batters and walking just three.
“She (Amanda Greenwood) did very, very well. She really threw a good game today,” said coach Bostelman. “For us to get to five hits on her (Makenzie Stiles), five hits were good hits.”
Down 6-2 and looking up at the scoreboard in the seventh inning, it was Paige Polizzi of Afton who attempted to keep the game alive with a resounding triple to start the seventh inning. Polizzi would score the third run for Afton when her teammate Abby Beaulieu earned the RBI in her efforts – however, Beaulieu attempted to stretch the play to third and was thrown out – effectively ending Afton’s hopes of knocking off Deposit.
“Really played good tonight, we made a couple mistakes with the five errors. But we had plenty of opportunities, this game could’ve been a lot closer,” said coach Bostelman.
Deposit softball will host Bainbridge-Guilford in the championship MAC league tournament game on Wednesday, May 10, at 4:30 p.m. Afton will travel to Hancock on Thursday, May 11, at 4:30 p.m. to play for the third place spot in the tournament.
