Norwich softball concludes winless season

NORWICH – Coming off a tough-fought two game loss to Susquehanna Valley on Wednesday night, the Tornado girls battled for their last chance at grabbing a win in 2017, dropping a home game at 10-4 on Thursday night to Johnson City.
On Wednesday, Norwich hosted the Sabers of Susquehanna Valley in double-header action. The first game would see the best results for Norwich – who lost a 3-0 tight game – recording two hits against star pitcher Pappas in the five innings at bat. Pappas took the win with 11 strikeouts and two hits, no walks.
Susquehanna Valley tacked on runs fourth and fifth innings to take the win. Recording the loss in game one on Wednesday was Alex Colley. Colley pitched five innings, striking out six and walking just one, while holding SV to just five hits.
Norwich’s two hits came from Morgan Conkling and Triniti Myers – each having one.

Game two of the day, saw Susquehanna Valley figure out the Norwich defense slightly more, winning 6-0 over Norwich.
Olivia Granquist would take the loss for Norwich on the mound, four innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. Pappas would take the win again for SV, recording a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks.
A 0-0 game until the third inning, Susquehanna Valley added a massive amount of runs in the third – five runs – sinking Norwich.
The Sabers finished with eight hits in the game.

With their final time taking a ball field in the 2017 season, Norwich softball hosted the Johnson City Wildcats on Thursday, May 11, dropping their final game to the lady Wildcats 10-4.
A near blowout by the score – the game would be anything but that as the close game would only see JC pull away late for the win.
For five innings, Norwich battled for their first win, something the young team worked hard for – but ultimately couldn’t grasp.
Norwich trailed Johnson City 5-2 on Thursday after five innings. With the lady Tornado picking up both runs in the third inning. Recording a total of six hits in the game, Morgan Conkling and Kate Dowdall ripped off back-to-back singles, followed by a fielders choice of Airelle Jacquette to load the bases. Alex Colley and Allison Yacano would then each snag RBI’s with ground outs to make the game 4-2 at the time.
Down 8-2 entering sixth inning to the lady Wildcats, Norwich got the ball in motion once again. Lauren Llwellyn popped a single to reach the base, followed by Parker Walsh reaching on an error. Morgan Conkling grabbed two RBI on the play – smashing the ball, reaching base on an error – sending Llwellyn and Walsh home. That is where it was ended, as JC’s pitcher, Fox, gained the final strikeout to end the Tornado hopes of a comeback.
Johnson City added two additional runs in the seventh inning to close out the 10-4 win.
Taking the loss for Norwich on the mound was Alex Colley, who pitched five innings with seven strikeouts and just two walks. Olivia Granquist pitched the final two innings, earning five strikeouts and no walks in the process.
Fox of Johnson City pitched the entire game with nine strikeouts and three walks.
Best at the plate for Norwich was Kate Dowdall 2-4 with run, Morgan Conkling 1-3 with a run and two RBI, Alex Colley 0-2 with an RBI, Allison Yacano 0-4 with an RBI, Lauren Llwellyn 1-2 with a run, and Parker Walsh 1-3 with a run.
Norwich concludes their 2017 season with an overall record of 0-16.
“We got better as the year went,” said Norwich head coach Jim Sanford. “We were a young team, can only go up.”
