Tornado edged out by Blue Devils 8-3
NORWICH – A four run seventh inning by the Blue Devils provided more than enough breathing room as Chenango Forks escaped the clutches of the Norwich Purple Tornado baseball team on Tuesday May 9. The Blue Devils scored four runs over the course of the second, third, and fourth innings to advance their lead to 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Tornado cut the Blue Devil lead in half with a two run splurge in the bottom half of the fourth, as Cristobal Caballero and Marcus Cashman both scored on a Dylan Mack two RBI single.
As Norwich blanked the Chenango Forks offense in the fifth and sixth innings, the Purple Tornado hurried to get back to work.
In the bottom of the sixth, with Mike Trevisani on second base, Dylan Mack once again provided the offense, knocking a single up the middle scoring Trevisani, recording the RBI to put the deficit into the single digits at 4-3.
Unfortunately for the Tornado, Forks put together a string of five consecutive base runners, recording four runs on four hits in the top half of the seventh inning. The Blue Devils proceeded to then put down the NHS batters one-two-three to end the game in a victory of 8-3.
Dylan Mack recorded the big hits on the day, going 2-3 with three RBIs on the afternoon. Marcus Cashman took the loss for the Tornado as he threw six innings of work, gave up five runs – four earned while striking out eight in the process. NHS’ Nate Scheer threw the seventh inning, giving up three runs, two earned and struck out one in his relief outing.
“The errors didn’t kill us much, we just made some really bad running mistakes,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull. “They don’t show up in the box score, but we need to make those plays.”
The Tornado then received one day of rest before hosting Johnson City in Norwich on May 11, for the Tornado Senior Night.

JC beats Norwich in a heartbreaker on Senior Night 1-0
NORWICH – Norwich’s last home game of the year ended in a close, but nonetheless disappointing loss to STAC opponent Johnson City.
Despite putting the bat on the ball and only striking out a total of six times, the Purple Tornado were unable to put a runner past third base on the evening. And by the time the Purple Tornado got a runner on third, it was already the bottom of the seventh inning with their backs against the wall.
In a game where Norwich outhit Johnson City five to four, it’s surprising to see the better offensive team on the afternoon come out on the losing end.
The difference of the game was not of skill, but nearly by chance, as the Wildcats’ Chris Trayling scored on a wild pitch by NHS pitcher Nate Scheer in the top of the second inning – creating the one to nothing ballgame that ended with noticeable drama to those in attendance.
With Scheer having thrown a gem over his seven innings of work, recording seven strikeouts, giving up four hits, allowing three walks while not allowing an extra base hit to any player on the Wildcat’s roster. Scheer’s defensive performance put his team in a position to win the ballgame. Unfortunately for Scheer and the Tornado, the game just wasn’t in the cards.
“It’s hard, we’ve got to be able to advance runners, I didn’t want to steal anybody because their catcher was good,” said NHS head coach Rich Turnbull. Reflecting on the game, Turnbull noted that “Nate (Scheer) pitched a heck of a game today.”
Recording Norwich’s five hits in the game were: Eli Rodriguez, Cristobal Caballero, JT Vinal, Marcus Cashman, and Mike Trevisani – each having one hit a piece.
The group of NHS seniors – Brandon Barnes, Cristobal Caballero, Nathan Scheer, Dylan Mack, and Egan Parmalee – will go out for one last hurrah to cap off their stellar high school athletic careers as they travel to Cooperstown, New York for a matinee game on Sunday May 14. Playing on Mother’s Day, NHS takes on the Sidney Warriors at historic Doubleday Field.
