Vestal tennis wins Class B team crown, Shaver and Giglio move on to state qualifiers
APPALACHIN – Day two of the Class B varsity tennis tournament saw a Norwich team continue out a fine weekend on the courts – taking home a second-place doubles finished, as well as a fourth-place doubles finish.
Norwich ended its one year hiatus from the finals of the doubles Class B Section IV tournament, advancing Josiah Shaver and Matt Giglio. The Tornado duo mowed down their competition on Thursday, May 11, en route to a showdown with top-seeded Lucas Niermeyer and Haashim Shah of Vestal on Friday, May 12.
With Shaver and Giglio comfortably in the finals, Norwich now has had a doubles team in the finals of the Class B tournament six out of the last seven years.
Going into day two of the tournament, the Tornado team battled to a solid team standing – emerging as leading team after day one, with 22 points to Owego’s 20 and Vestal’s 19.
With a loss in the finals and a win in the consolation match – barring a Maine-Endwell finals win over Owego – Norwich would earn a tie for the tournament win with Vestal. With two losses in the finals and consolation matches, Norwich finishes in fourth-place.
Despite some solid tennis, Norwich could not maintain the team lead over eventual champions, Vestal.
Vestal earned the Class B team championship with a come from behind win over Shaver and Giglio, in the last match of the finals of the doubles.
“Really exciting finish. I am happy for Josiah and Matt they played really well for the amount of pressure on them. The fact that after losing the first set, we came back and crushed them in the second shows how much they are competitors,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart.
After ripping off three wins on day one, Shaver and Giglio were defeated in the finals by Vestal’s Lucas Niermeyer and Haashim Shah by a score of 7-6(4) in the first set. The Tornado duo would battle back to take a set from Vestal at 2-6 – before the top-seeded Golden Bears reclaimed their footing to sweep Norwich 6-0.
In the consolation match on the doubles side, Norwich’s Austin Benenati and Carson Maynard were locked into a fight for a respectable third-place finish – and a chance to advance to the New York State Qualifiers.
“Austin (Benenati) and Carson (Maynard) ran into a better Susquehanna Valley team. Sus. Valley played much better against us the second day, than the first day,” said coach Stewart. “Carson being a first year player, played well and so did Austin. They have a lot to be proud of. I hope they will be really excited for next year.”
Benenati and Maynard notably defeated Dusty Root and Cody Jacobs on day one, at 6-2 and 7-5. Come day two, and the same Susquehanna Valley team reversed the roles – grabbing the final slot to the New York State Qualifier with a 6-2 and 7-5 win over Norwich.
