SHERBURNE – Errors have proved costly for the Sherburne-Earlville varsity baseball team, especially in the past few weeks. They had a combined 11 errors in two of their games last week resulting in a 6-4 loss to Sauquoit Valley, and a 16-3 hammering from Clinton last Thursday, May 11.
In their 6-4 loss to Sauquoit Valley, the Marauders fell down early, and were in a 4-1 hole after just the fourth inning.
They mounted a comeback in the fifth, striking for three runs, and were down by just a run, but Sauquoit Valley struck for another insurance run in the seventh inning to secure the tight two-run victory.
“We played a good game overall. Sauquoit Valley is a very good baseball team in our league and we held our own against them,” said S-E head coach Jay Tackabury following the loss. “We still made a few mistakes early that cost us runs, which turned out to be the difference in the ballgame.”
Best in the loss for the Marauders was pitcher Joseph Purdy. Along with pitching five stellar innings, he went two-for-three at the plate in the loss, with a double, triple and three RBI’s.

ADIRONDACK – On May 10, the Marauders faced off against Adirondack. They struggled to find their footing once more, and were hammered on a final score of 10-1.
Lack of production on offense was what hurt S-E in this loss. They only mustered up five hits throughout the game, driving in just one run.
Best in that loss for the Marauders was Trevor May, who had the only extra base hit of the game for his team in the loss, smashing a double, and Brandon Howard, who had the only RBI on the day for S-E.
Only a day later, S-E took on Clinton. This was not a hotly contested game, as the Marauders were trounced 16-3 by their opposition.
In contrast to their previous two losses, the S-E offense started off well in this game, but they proved no match for the potent Clinton offense, who struck for 16 runs off of 15 hits throughout the game.

SHERBURNE – S-E’s baseball team was finally able to break out of their three game skid yesterday, May 16, as they triumphed over Holland-Patent by the slimmest of margins, on a final score of 7-6.
Although the Marauders still committed five errors in the win, their offense bailed them out.
In what was a very closely contested game throughout, S-E looked doomed to be losers once again, as they surrendered five runs in the fifth inning to go down 6-1. However, they proved resilient, and knocked in six runs in the sixth inning to one-up their opponents and eek out the victory.
“In the top of the fifth, our defense was sloppy giving up four unearned runs. To my players credit, they kept their heads up and came out in the bottom of the sixth and put six runs on the board,” said Marauder head coach Jay Tackabury. “Vinny Albertina had a big two out single up the middle driving in two runs, Wayne Law had three RBI, and Cody Beckwith had a timely two out single driving in two runs also.”
Tackabury praised his team’s effort in securing the win. “I’m very proud of the effort my players exhibited,” he said. “Hopefully we can build upon this win over our last two games, and into next season.”
Next up for Sherburne-Earlville baseball, they will host Canastota on Wednesday, May 17, at 4:30 p.m. Prior to the first-pitch, the S-E seniors will be recognized.
