NORWICH – The 2017 spring season is in the books for the Norwich Purple Tornado, capping off the season with a final away/home game against Sidney.
The game began on Mother’s Day, May 14 at Double Day park in Cooperstown – however, a rainout after one inning, with Sidney up 1-0 – sent the game to Norwich forefront to finish out.
Sidney finished off the bottom of the first inning, smacking in another run.
“We made two or three base running mistakes that cost us. We have been making those all year and we gotta work on stopping that,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull. “Sidney is really much better than their record, they can hit the ball. If they can keep hitting and don’t make errors, they could make a good run in sectionals.”
Home plate would go silent, as the pitchers on either side went to work for the next three innings, making it a 2-0 game going into the fifth inning.
“It was a good non-league game for us. They had one big inning, they just hit the ball. They pounded the ball. They started to get on Mike (Trevisani) and then when you hit Nate (Scheer), he throws hard, when you hit Nate it is going to go.”
Sidney smacked home seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning – following an inning where Norwich was attempting to creep toward the Warriors with a run of their own – the game moved from 2-1 to a massive 9-2. Norwich snagged two runs in the seventh, to finish out the game.
Taking the loss for Norwich on the mound was Mike Trevisani, pitching 4.33 innings, striking out three and walking two with his 93 pitches. Senior Nate Scheer pitched for the final time as a Norwich Tornado, coming in for relief and pitching 1.67 innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Trevisani surrendered eight hits, while Scheer allowed an additional two.
In the loss, Norwich managed four hits, as Scheer finished 2-3 with all three RBI. Marcus Cashman finished 1-2 with two runs, while JT Vinal added 1-3 with a run.
“I like the guys that were on the team this year. After the game today I even threw more batting practice to a kid who wanted to. Most of the guys are going to play some sort of summer baseball,” said coach Turnbull. “We are sad we are losing our seniors. We are young, and I am looking forward to working with the young guys. We’re young, and we’re going to be young for a while, it is a good problem to have. I just want to keep changing the culture of Norwich baseball.”
With the 9-3 loss to Sidney on Tuesday, May 16, Norwich baseball concludes their season with a 3-14 record – two wins more than the 2016 NHS team.
“As my guys said, ‘hey, that’s two more wins than last year.’ Absolutely it is, so next year we want to add a couple more wins, get to seven or eight and make it to sectionals. We beat teams that are in sectionals – Chenango Forks, Chenango Valley – we were in games with pretty much everyone, but Seton Catholic and Oneonta,” said coach Turnbull. “At this point next year, if I am getting the team ready for a sectional game, I would be very happy. And it is definitely is possible.
Norwich baseball will hold their end of the season banquet on June 5, at the Norwich High School.
