Chenango County Athletes compete at Sidney and Three Bald Guys Pentathlons

Perhaps the most grueling and intense events in all of the events on the track and field circuit, the pentathlon shows an athlete’s strength, endurance, speed, and athleticism. At the Sidney Pentathlon and Three Bald Guys pentathlons, multiple Chenango County athletes went to the oval, pits and cage to compete for a pentathlon title on Monday, May 15.
SIDNEY – At the Sidney Pentathlon Meet, Coy Austin from Greene placed second at the meet amassing an impressive 2,457 points. Austin, was outlasted by Downsville’s Desmond Lambe who posted an overall score of 2,480 points.
Adam Brady of Oxford placed third with a total of 1,933 points, while teammate Daniel Woodford placed sixth recording 1,132 points.
Austin’s top events on the afternoon included wins in the shot put with a throw of 39’7” for 601 points as well as a win in the 110m hurdles sprinting for a time of 18.14 seconds recording 511 points. Brady won the 1500m race, recording a time of 4:57 minutes for 576 points. Woodford’s best finish was third place in the high jump, clearing a height of 4’7” for 324 points.
On the women’s side of the Sidney Pentathlon, Matraca Harmon from Bainbridge Guilford placed second with a score of 1,749 points, while her counterpart Mary Klecha from Greene finished with a total of 1,575 points for fourth place finish. Harmon won the 800m run recording 424 points on her 2:53 minute performance in the event. Klecha’s best performance came in shot put as she recorded a win with a throw of 22’9”, for 332 points in the event.
WINDSOR – At the Three Bald Guys Pentathlon in Windsor, the two competitors representing the Norwich Purple Tornado track team in Ky’sawn Veale and Chris Brown traveled down to Windsor High School to take on the fierce competition of the Southern Tier Athletic Conference.
Veale recorded 2,359 points on his way to a fifth place finish, with Brown scored 2,013 points on his way to an eleventh place spot.
Veale held his own in the high jump, long jump and shot put scoring in the middle of the pack between his STAC opposition. Veale’s top finish and top scoring event was in the 110m hurdles as he turned in a time of 16.9 seconds, placing second in the event for 610 points.
As for Brown, his fourth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 17’5”, as he scored 447 points in the event. Brown’s top scoring event was in the 1500m race scoring 474 points in a time of 5:15 minutes for ninth place.
The Norwich Purple Tornado track and field team returns to the track this afternoon as they travel to Windsor to compete at STAC championships with a 4 p.m. start time.
Greene, Bainbridge-Guilford, Oxford, Unadilla Valley, and Harpursville-Afton all will be participating at the MAC championship in Greene this afternoon with the first event starting at 4:15 p.m.
