Librarians remind county residents of free program: 'Books from Birth'
CHENANGO COUNTY – As 'Books from Birth' enters its third year, staff at local libraries are doing their best to ensure that every family in Chenango County is aware of the program which provides free books to local children from birth to age-five.
Every month, children who are enrolled in 'Books from Birth' receive a new, age-appropriate book from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in the mail.
Started in 2015 by Chenango United Way, the Norwich Rotary, and the nine public libraries throughout the county, 'Books from Birth' is an effort to provide free age-appropriate books to children in the county on a monthly basis in the hopes that children who grow up with books in their homes and who read will be more likely to succeed in school, go on to college, and lead successful and productive lives.
'Books from Birth' currently has enrolled 1,470 of the approximately 2,735 eligible children in the county to receive free books, according to a release from Guernsey Memorial Library, but Library & 'Books from Birth' Director Connie Dalrymple is not ready to settle just yet –– she would like to reach 100 percent of eligible county children.
