Oxford fourth graders crowned national champions in online competition
OXFORD – On Thursday, May 25, the fourth grade classes of Oxford Primary School stayed behind after school to compete in an online mathematics competition offered by educational website www.sumdog.com.
31-fourth graders from Oxford stayed at the school until 8 p.m. on May 25 as they competed against 3,856 classes from across the country.
Through the students' hard work and wit, the Oxford fourth grade teams placed 129th, 108th, 3rd, and for the first time ever 1st place overall in the national competition.
Notwithstanding their huge accomplishment, the fourth grade students at Oxford Primary School had a longstanding deal with their teacher, Clayton Kappauf, that was related to the competition: If the students could manage to win a National Championship on sumdog.com, they would be able to watch Mr. Kappauf get his hair cut into a mohawk.
And so as a bonus for their triumph Kappauf stayed true to his word, and the fourth graders of Oxford Primary School were allowed to witness as their teacher's haircut was morphed into a mohawk by a fellow teacher.
Kappauf offered his congratulations to the students for their accomplishment as well as gratitude to the parents who volunteered at the competition to help supervise the children.
