NORWICH - After going down by four runs in the opening inning, the senior Chenango Hellcats valiantly battled their way back to force a 4-4 tie against the Harpursville Legion yesterday, June 8.
Paden Burlison got the game-tying RBI for the Hellcats in the bottom of the seventh inning, as he grounded out to the second baseman, allowing Jon Heggie to come across the plate and knot things up at four runs apiece.
“The momentum definitely switched to our side in that seventh inning,” said senior Hellcats coach Ben Barnes. “The guys had to fight from behind the whole game and the runs finally started crossing the plate.”
The Hellcats did have a shot to win the game, but Michael Graven-Briggs stranded the winning run at third, as he struck out looking to end the game.
Nate Scheer started on the mound for the Hellcats. He pitched three and two third innings, allowing four runs on four hits, while walking five, and striking out five.
Jon Heggie came in on relief duty. He tossed three and a third innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits, walking four, and striking out two in the tie.
“I thought Nate and Jon both pitched great,” said Barnes. “Nate really settled in, putting up zeroes in the second through the fourth (innings). Jon also came in and put up some zeroes.”
“For the first game of the summer, I thought the team handled themselves very well,” Barnes said. “I think we need to work on having a little better approach at the plate and moving runners a little better.”
The Hellcats will be hoping to earn their first win of the season when they travel to play in the Mansfield Tournament this weekend.
