NEW BERLIN – As a four year varsity track and field athlete, Julia Oglesby, a junior at Unadilla Valley is primed for her first trip to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Track and Field State Championships as she competes in the 100m dash.
Just like with any endeavor in life, there is always a process involved to breaking through to reach excellence. And in Oglesby’s case, she’s steered the course of adversity that has brought her to this very moment.
The journey to the New York State Championships began when Oglesby was in sixth grade as she counted down the days until the seventh grade modified sports season began; opening a whole new world of organized athletics.
However, the first major step was making it to Section IV State Qualifiers over the past two seasons of her varsity career, and now she’s reached to what many high school athletes deem as the pinnacle of success within the sport.
“It’s pretty big news for me to have the opportunity to compete in the state meet,” said Oglesby of her well-earned accomplishment.
Yet, despite the excitement of converging and competing with some of the best high school track and field athletes in New York State, Oglesby still has work to do.
“This is the big week and my coaches have put together workouts that work exclusively on the technique and dynamics of sprinting the 100m which is something I’m working to improve. The biggest thing is not letting the big stage get into my head, and to run my race,” said Oglesby.
While emotions run high, and as Oglesby maintains her focus to this weekend’s main event, Unadilla Valley head coach Bill Holdrege understands the secret to the upper-classman’s success on the track.
“This season Julia is much stronger physically. She was dedicated to lifting weights and it transitioned to the track,” said coach Holdrege.
Yet, despite the sprinter’s achievement of qualifying for a state championship meet, Holdrege acknowledges there is still more left in the tank for Oglesby.
“There is always room for improvement, however, technique and biomechanics is what we focused on this week,” said coach Holdrege.
However, the UV storm coach isn’t worried about his athlete’s determination and attitude when the gun goes off as she’s put in all the necessary work.
“Julia is quiet, focused and task driven; she strives to be the best,
said coach Holdrege before commenting on her attitude. “(The) glass is always half full.”
Oglesby hopes her attitude in and outside the track and field circuit offers the younger generation inspiration, saying, “I hope to inspire people to be humble in your successes and try your hardest because opportunities do come with the steady ambition to be the best athlete you can be.”
Learning from someone who has hustled to put in the work to get to this point is something priceless for young track and field athletes, however, as the beginning of the New York State meet begins this afternoon June 9, Oglesby will most certainly be locked in.
As the competition grows, she’ll be ready for whatever gets thrown at her. Oglesby is currently the 14th seed in the 100m dash for Division II girls competition, with a seed time of 12.78 seconds in the event.
With Oglesby’s last meet of the season upon her, she’s hoping to end her 2017 outdoor track and field campaign with a ‘bang’ as she looks to break the 100m Unadilla Valley school record.
“My fastest 100m time is 12.78 seconds,” said Oglesby. “The school record is 12.70 which was set in 2000, so I am putting in the extra work to set a new one.”
In closing, and all in healthy competition, Oglesby wished the rest of Chenango County’s athletes the best of luck at states, saying, “Congratulations to all of the other athletes competing in states and good luck.”
Oglesby’s inaugural state meet appearance will kick off today Friday June 9, as the coach and athlete tandem travel to Union-Endicott High School in preparation for the Division II 100m dash event, with the projected time for the event to begin at 1:50 p.m. Admission to the event is $8.00.
