NORWICH – The newly-constructed Chobani Fit Path was formally revealed to the public at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, June 10 at Weiler Park in Norwich.
The Fit Path – essentially a series of 11 outdoor exercise stations throughout the park – is a creation of The Chobani Foundation in conjunction with the Chenango County Building a Healthy Community Coalition and the City of Norwich as they strive to foster a healthier community.
“A couple years ago, [Director of Chenango County Public Health] Isaiah Sutton came to us with a simple question: How can Chobani help Chenango County's citizens lead a more healthy, active lifestyle?” said Cassie Treen at the unveiling, Corporate Communications Project Manager at Chobani. “From that initial conversation, two ideas were born – both of which you're seeing come to fruition today.”
The two ideas Treen and Sutton brainstormed were the Chobani Fit Path, and the 'Eat Smart, Play More: Chobani Healthy Challenge': a 12-week nutrition and fitness challenge which aims to improve individuals' health while raising money to be donated to the winning team's choice.
“The first [idea] was the Chobani Challenge – encouraging people like you to commit to 12 weeks of improving their personal fitness and nutrition while also raising money for local charities,” explained Treen. “The second was this new installation you see all around you at Weiler Park – the Chobani Fit Path. Sponsored by the Chobani Foundation and made possible by the Building a Healthy Community Coalition and the City of Norwich, this unique outdoor course takes fitness-minded visitors through a variety of strength-building exercises across all levels of skill. As you make your way around the park, each station provides easy-to-understand explanations of how to perform each exercise safely and to optimize outcome.”
The 2017 'Eat Smart, Play More: Chobani Healthy Challenge' commenced with the opening of the new Chobani Fit Path, but organizers report they will accept late registrations until June 16, as long as the competition's cap of 50 teams has not been met. Sutton estimates at least 200 individual participants in this year's challenge.
“Since day one, Chobani has been on a mission to provide better food for more people through our delicious, nutritious, natural and accessible yogurt products,” said Treen. “Today, we’re furthering that mission with this gift to the people of Chenango County – so everyone can have access to the tools they need to enjoy a more healthy and active lifestyle.”
