Hellcats suffer loss to Johnson City, mercied in the fifth
JOHNSON CITY – The Hellcats traveled to Johnson City in hopes of cracking into the season with yet another win – however, high powered Johnson City smacked them for a 11-0 loss on the road.
The difference in the game proved to be the superb hitting of Johnson City – snagging seven hits to the Hellcats two – while two errors in the field compared to JC’s errorless fielding, didn’t help the cause.
It was the seniors who came through for the Hellcats in their road loss on Wednesday, June 14, as Oxford senior Jon Heggie finished 1-3 and Norwich senior Cristobal Caballero managed to go 1-2 on the night.
Fellow senior Nate Scheer of Norwich stood on the mound for the Hellcat loss, pitching 4.1 innings – adding eight strikeouts and just four walks in his efforts.
“I feel that Nate (Scheer) pitched great,” said Hellcat head coach Ben Barnes. “Then several late game walks from the relief killed us. These lead to the fifth inning mercy.”
Mikey Graven-Briggs of Afton and older brother Conor Graven-Briggs came in for relief of Scheer for the Hellcats – with Mikey walking three and surrendering four runs, while Conor surrendered two hits with one run.
Scheer and the Hellcats managed to keep the game knotted at 0-0 for nearly three full innings – before Johnson City snagged a run in the bottom of the third to pull the game to 1-0 in favor of the home team. An additional run for Johnson City in the fourth inning and the game was still in reach for a Hellcat comeback.
That is when the fifth inning began. After getting blanked at the plate in the top of the fifth, Johnson City proceeded to pull in the runs – racking up nine runs in the bottom of the fifth for the 11-0 mercy rule win.
“The bats were quiet all game. We really need to limit the strike outs in order to find the success our team is capable of,” said coach Barnes.
The Hellcats (1-1-1 overall), play home next against Hillcrest Post 1194, on Friday, June 16, at 6 p.m. The Hellcats will then have a busy weekend ahead of them, playing a double-header at home on Saturday, June 17, against Binghamton Post #80 – first game is scheduled for 12 p.m. On Sunday, the Hellcats will once again be home, this time against the Oneonta Greenwave, with the start time scheduled for 2 p.m.
