GREENSBORO, NC – Norwich sprinter Zack Race will be in North Carolina this weekend for the chance of a lifetime.
Recently, Race, having just completed his junior year, and having just raced at the New York State Championship – virtually holds all the Norwich High School sprinting records – has qualified for the New Balance Outdoor Track and Field Nationals, in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The outdoor nationals celebrates the 26th year of holding the event – inviting some of the fastest sprinters from around the country to participate. Race qualified to compete in the 200m dash, after breaking his own NHS record in the event, running a 21.83 second time (FAT).
“You have to hit a time to qualify. It doesn’t matter if you’re the North Dakota State Champion, if you don’t hit the time, you cant go,” said Norwich head Track and Field coach Shaun Horan. “He (Race) is racing Emerging Elite. He is probably going to be racing about 25 guys all running that time.”
Race’s fastest FAT time 200m is clocked at a 21.83, narrowly qualifying for the Emerging Elite category which has a standard of 21.54 to 21.84.
“He is not settling in on what he has accomplished this far,” said coach Horan. “He is still very focused, trying to improve and working hard.”
Race will be taking to the track this weekend for the preliminary round of the Emerging Elite 200m dash on Saturday, June 17, at 12:15 p.m. If Race were to qualify for the finals in the event, he will compete again on Saturday, at 2:40 p.m.

“I just want thank my family for traveling down and supporting me. Especially coach (Shaun) Horan and Coach (Phil) Curley for getting me here. Once again I'm just treating it as another opportunity, no different than states or any other meet,” said Race. “No nerves really, just anxious to get out there and do my thing. I worked really hard with coach Curley this week. I really didn't take a day off since the state meet. Whenever I do take a day off all I think about is if anyone out there is outworking me, and that bothers me more than anything. It's one thing to lose the race, but it's another thing to allow yourself to be beaten because you don't work hard.”
