Norwich French students enjoy 'bon voyage' in Quebec City
QUEBEC CITY – 23 Norwich City School French students had a 'bon voyage' over Memorial Day Weekend as they travelled to Quebec City to experience French-Canadian culture firsthand.
Organized by French teacher Sarah Waters, who also took a group of students to Montreal two years ago, it's reported that this year's trip involved two years of planning and fundraising before they were ready to venture north of the border.
“The students had a great experience and I think they learned a lot,” said Mrs. Waters of the trip. “They were wonderful ambassadors for the Norwich City School District.”
Also chaperoning the trip were Norwich French teacher Laura Holmes and former Norwich aide Matt Colgan.
The group left early on the morning of Friday, May 26 and returned late Monday evening, May 29.
Students had the opportunity to experience French language and French-Canadian culture as they toured Old Quebec, witnessed a battlefield re-enactment of the legendary Plains of Abraham battle, on top of many other cultural experiences such as visits to Sainte-Anne Basilica, a woodcarver, and a copper museum.
“The visit to the basilica was my favorite part,” said Katie Doliver, Norwich High School 10th grader who attended the trip.
Additionally, students were able to cross a suspension bridge over Montmorency Falls, as well as take park in a music and stand-up comedy show, all while being provided periodic opportunities to expose themselves to French delicacies such as poutine and crepes, traditional cuisine and entertainment at a 'sugar shack.'
“I strongly believe in the importance of learning a foreign language and that travel gives students a great firsthand experience for what we have been learning in the classroom,” said Mrs. Waters. “It was really fun and enjoyable.”
Waters is already in the process of planning the next student-based trip to take place in April of 2019 – this time to France.
