Well-respected gemologist to present in Coventryville next week

COVENTRYVILLE – All are invited to attend a program organized by the Coventry Town Museum featuring well-respected local gemologist Joseph VanSteenburg on Tuesday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m.

Those who are native to the Chenango region of New York, who are proud of the area's natural beauty, and who are interested in how natural resources have lifted the history and economy of the area are called to attend Mr. VanSteenburg's presentation in the Community Meeting Room of the Coventryville Congregational Church.

VanSteenburg's presentation is said to include an exhibition of photographs, maps, and documents from his gemology expeditions, field trips, and camping trips –– as well as examples of the fascinating work done by gemologists from this area of NYS.

The presentation is also said to include a “pop-up museum” display wall of polished and unpolished minerals, stones, gems, fossilized material, basic amateur field gemologist's tools, and booklets filled with useful, relevant information.

VanSteenburg's presentation will introduce attendees to interesting “rocks” such as anhydrite, azurite, baryte, calcite, gypsum, halite, malachite, manganite, and many more of which are all found right around this region.

VanSteenburg will also enlighten attendees about some famous area-gemologists, industries that were founded as a result of the gemologists' discoveries, how to use basic gemologists' tools and their purposes, as well as how to get involved as an amateur gemologist.

The program will leave plenty of time for questions-and-answers and for VanSteenburg to connect interested individuals with appropriate resources.

The presentation at the Coventry Town Museum, as always, will be family friendly. Those at the museum eagerly welcome children and students of all ages.

Light refreshments will be served, and the museum will be open for visitors to tour before the program commences at 6:30 p.m.

The Coventryville Congregational Church is located at 113 County Road 27, near the four-way intersection of W St. Hwy 206, in Coventryville.
