Oxford PONY League rallies late to secure first win of the season
GREENE – In what proved to be a very split game, the Oxford PONY League squad rallied late in the game to drive in all 10 of their runs in the final three innings for the 10-8 win on the road.
Taking the win for Oxford on the mound was Matt Roach. Roach threw 2.1 innings for four strikeouts and three walks – allowing just two hits for two runs, one being earned.
Perhaps even more impressive was the pitching in relief of Roach, Oxford employed Nick Cirello for 4.2 innings, as Cirello went to work on the Greene batters. Cirello secured nine strikeouts and just three walks – but allowed four hits and six runs.
The bats were just not there for Oxford, as they entered the fifth inning of play down 3-0.
That is when the offense clicked. Oxford smashed in five runs in the top of the fifth inning – taking the brief lead at 5-3. However, Greene powered back for a four-run inning in the bottom of the fifth, answering back by reclaiming the lead at 7-5.
The pace wasn’t sustainable for Greene, who fell off a cliff down the stretch. Oxford took the sixth inning by storm, securing four additional runs – all before each team tacked on a run in the seventh to let the dust settle on the final score of 10-8 in favor of Oxford.
Each team would have 30 at bat attempts, with Oxford scoring 10 runs on three hits, with five RBI. Greene would score their eight runs on six hits, with four RBI.
Best at the plate for Oxford was Colby Crandall 1-4 with two runs and three RBI – followed by Matt Roach 1-3 with two runs and one RBI, and Keegan Franklin 1-4 with an RBI.
Greene would smack the ball six times in their losing efforts, with Rapp leading the way going 4-4 with three runs and three RBI. Youngs would take the remaining two hits to finish 2-3 with one run and one RBI.
Taking the loss on the mound and at home was Titus of Greene, who pitched two innings for three strikeouts and one walks. In relief, Youngs grabbed eight strikeouts and just two walks.
This stellar pitching wouldn’t be enough to hold off Oxford who capitalized down the stretch, taking full advantage of Greene’s five errors.
Next up for Oxford (1-3 overall), they are scheduled to play home against Edmeston on Monday, July 3, at home. First pitched is set for 6 p.m. Greene is set to play at home against Edmeston on Thursday, July 6, at 6 p.m.
