Hellcats fall Cortland-Homer on the road
CORTLAND – The Chenango Hellcats shuffled some scheduling around to ensure the playing of their previously rained out league game against Cortland-Homer – however, the home to would slice open the Hellcats for an 8-1 win.
“(We) need to get the bats going early on,” said Hellcats head coach Ben Barnes. “We left seven runners in scoring position.”
The Hellcats fell behind early in the contest, played at Beaudry Park in Cortland on Wednesday, June 28, going down 1-0 after the first inning and 3-0 after the bottom of the third inning.
With only five hits in the entire game, and leaving nine runners on base, the Hellcats struggled throughout the game.
Taking the loss on the road for the Hellcats was Tommy Voce, who pitched 4.1 innings for four strikeouts and four walks. Seth Simmons added 1.2 innings pitched and one strikeout.
Already leading the Hellcats 3-0, Cortland-Homer smacked home another run in the fourth inning, before ripping the Hellcats wide open for a four-run fifth inning – taking the lead to 8-0.
Avoiding the shutout on the road proved to be the silver lining to the game, as Tyler King scored late in the top of the seventh inning for the 8-1 game.
Best at the plate for the Hellcats in the rough road loss was Tyler King who finished 2-2 with the lone run. Following King was Connor Graven-Briggs 1-4, Nate Scheer 1-3, and Paden Burlison 1-3.
Next up for the Hellcats (2-5-1 overall), they will hope to break their five game losing streak when they travel to Owego on Friday, June 30, to play Owego-Tioga Legion. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
