UTICA – Yesterday, June 28, Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi (D – Utica) officially launched his campaign for Congress in New York's 22nd Congressional District – which encompasses Chenango County – a seat currently held by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (R – New Hartford).
In announcing his campaign, Brindisi said, "I believe in public service as a calling—I’ve represented our families in the Assembly and fought for our children on the School Board. From Utica to Rome, to Binghamton and Cortland, I understand the challenges our communities face and I know we can build a brighter future for our families."
He continued, "In Congress, I will be an independent voice for upstate New York—I’m ready to work with anyone to get things done and bring positive change and new jobs to our community. I believe bipartisanship is the key to finding solutions that can make a difference for our families and community."
Congresswoman Claudia Tenney released a statement in response to Brindisi's campaign announcement, stating, "Frankly, I am excited that Anthony Brindisi has chosen to run for Congress because voters will have a very clear choice."
Tenney went on to say that Brindisi is a "slick politician" who "pretends to be moderate when it benefits him..."
Brindisi had a different approach in acknowledging his opponent.
"My opponent, Congresswoman Tenney, and I could not be more different," Brindisi said. "Rep. Tenney has not been independent and is not motivated by doing what’s best for her constituents; rather, she has been an unquestioning rubber stamp on critical issues that affect all of our lives."
He continued, "Rep. Tenney has consistently refused to participate in town halls or to even listen to the scores of constituents who want their voices heard on important issues...Furthermore, Rep. Tenney supports more tax breaks for corporations that keep jobs overseas and for the wealthiest people in America, while I believe tax breaks should go to hardworking middle-class families and small businesses."
Brindisi concluded his campaign announcement saying that should he be elected to Congress, he will listen to and represent all of his constituents and not "just the wealthy chosen few," and he vows to fight with passion to "provide principled and bipartisan service to our families and communities."
The 22nd Congressional District of New York will hold its election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 6, 2018.
