Unadilla Valley PONY league team splits two games over the week
NEW BERLIN – What better way to respond to taking a 25-4 loss at home, than to come out and flip the game to defend your home field for a 16-3 win just two days later.
That is exactly what the Unadilla Valley PONY league baseball squad did over this week of play, falling behind early and in a big way to Schenevus on Tuesday, June 27, for the 25-4 loss – all before rebounding on Thursday, June 29, for the 16-3 win over Milford.
During the home game against Schenevus, Unadilla Valley’s defense was bombarded with hits – 12 to be specific – while the UV offense couldn’t managed to key in on the ball, producing just two hits of their own.
Earning the two hits for UV was Colin Grant, going 1-1 and Drew Emrich, going 1-2 with two runs. Cameron Osborne secured an Rbi and a run while Brandon Kneale snagged a run as well.
Unfortunately, the game was over before UV had their first at bats. Schenevus smashed in five runs in the top of the first for the 5-0 lead, before hitting in six more in the top of the second inning. UV would rally somewhat in the bottom of the third for three runs – but this comeback was quickly stifled with a six run inning in the fourth and an eight run inning in the fifth for Schenevus.
Taking the loss on the mound for Unadilla Valley was Isaiah Carkuff, 1.2 innings for one strikeout and two walks while allowing four hits for 10 runs. In relief UV saw Osborne pitch two innings for three strikeouts and one walks, allowing five hits and six runs – with Gavin Bonczkowski pitching one inning for three strikeouts two walks and allowing two hits for seven runs.
10 errors in the defense allowed the 25-4 blowout to occur, handing UV a loss.
However, just two days later on Thursday, Unadilla Valley again played host, this time to Milford.
Using some much improved field to their advantage – only committing three errors in the win – UV smacked Milford for the 16-3 win.
This time around it was UV with the big opening inning, racking in seven hits for the early lead. Milford responded with a run in the top of the second, to which UV answered with another run to keep pace.
Up 8-1, Milford attempted the comeback, hitting in two runs for scores in the top of the third. What did UV’s squad do in response? None other than shut down all offensive production from Milford while piling in seven runs in the bottom of the third – with the final run coming in in the fourth inning.
Milford employed a pitching by committee style of play, with five different players taking the mound in the five inning game, for a combined seven strikeouts, seven walks and allowing seven hits for 16 runs – 11 being earned runs.
Taking the big win at home for UV was Colin Grant, who secured four innings with seven strikeouts and just two walks, allowing two hits for three runs – one earned. Cameron Osborne came in for the final inning to close out the win, snagging two strikeouts and no walks, while allowing just one hit for no runs.
The big difference besides the reduced errors was the improved batting for the home squad. Leading the way was Osborne 2-3 with two runs and three RBI, Garrett Proskine 2-4 with two runs and two RBI, Gavin Bonczkowski 2-2 with three runs and one RBI, Grant 1-2 with two runs and one RBI, and Drew Emrich 1-4 with a run. Mark Hine managed an 0-2 count but snagged three RBI and one run, while Brandon Kneal secured three runs – with Dalton Proskine adding in a run.
Next up for Unadilla Valley’s PONY League team (3-3 overall), they are scheduled to play home against Sherburne’s squad on Wednesday, July 5, at 6 p.m.
