ENDWELL – Regrouping after a weekend doubleheader loss to Vestal, the Junior Hellcats snagged a third win over Maine-Endwell’s squad – taking the win at 5-1 with the power of their bats.
“We played our brand of baseball. We hit the ball hard, stayed in good counts and produced. It was nice seeing everyone contribute, even off the bench. Nice to season sweep a division opponent,” said Junior Hellcat head coach Nick McCullough.
Eight hits for the team, with three RBI and five runs equaled a win over the Spartans Junior Legion team, on June 28. Leading the charge at the plate for the Junior Hellcats was Brad Beckwith 3-4 with one RBI and one run – and Brayden Supensky 2-2 with a run.
“Brad Beckwith played completely amazing. Had 3 hits and started him at a position he doesn’t normally play and did a great job. JT Vinal also played very well defensively,” said coach McCullough.
Errors can kill momentum in even the best teams – and cutting down on mistakes was a key issue following the 10-0 and 9-0 losses to Vestal. The Junior Hellcats minimized their mistakes in the field, committing just one error against Maine-Endwell.
Impressively, the Junior Hellcats truly got the best of the Maine-Endwell squad the third time around – leading in runs the entire game, beginning with their first run in the top of the third inning.
Up 1-0, the Junior Hellcats slid in for another run in the top of the fourth – only to see that run matched by M-E in the bottom of the fourth.
It was looking to be a battle.
Two runs in the top of the fifth – with another run coming in the top of the sixth – and the defense showed up to play against M-E. The Junior Hellcats blanked Maine-Endwell in the final three innings.
Taking the win on the mound was Justin Bates, who pitched for four innings for two strikeouts and four walks – while allowing three hits for just one run.
Coming in for relief was Kegan Wright, two innings for two walks, and one strikeout – and Eli Rodriguez, one innings for two strikeouts and one walk.
“We’re still low on pitching, so someone had to step up for the team. Justin Bates did just that. He’s normally a relief guy out of the bullpen, but we went to him and he pitched extremely well. (Bates) attacked the hitters and made them put the ball in play,” said coach McCullough. “We went to the bullpen for Kegan Wright. He pitched well, as well. (We) kept M-E off the board, but we had to go the bullpen again for our closer Eli (Rodriguez) to shut the door. You always have to respect a team like M-E, so I didn’t take any chances.”
Rounding out the hits for the Junior Hellcats was Rodriguez 1-4, Tyler Hagen 1-3 with an RBI, Mike Trevisani 1-3 – with Nick Shoemaker, Cody Beckwith, and Marcus Cashman each scoring a run in their efforts.
Next up for the Junior Hellcats (6-7 overall, 3-3 division), they will play William Russell Post 404 at home on Saturday, July 1, at 6 p.m.
“We gave the guys the next few days off then we’re back at it on Saturday,” said coach McCullough.
