Oxford PONY League focuses on finishing out league play

OXFORD – After a week long hiatus away from the baseball diamond, the lads of the Oxford Blackhawk PONY league team are back in business.
Finishing last week with an even record of 1-1-1, the Oxford squad are seeking to cap off the Fourth of July holiday with a win this afternoon, due in part to their improved play as of late.
This afternoon’s game serves up a tough test for the Blackhawks in Cherry Valley Springfield- the current division A leader in Otesanango PONY league action. With the inter-league playoffs opening on July 13, the guess is as good as any high school summer ball analyst as to whom will come out of the regular season with a playoff berth.
In their previous contest – dating back to June 26, the Blackhawks were handed a 15-1 loss to the Cherry Valley-Springfield team. However, in the last two games played by the baseball boys of Oxford, they have turned out well on the offensive end.
Taking a 10-8 win against the Greene Trojans on June 28, provided the momentum needed to put some winds in the sails of the Blackhawks. The following night on June 29, the two inter-county rivals went for the second round of the Chenango County series, this time the ballgame finished in an 11-11 tie due to darkness.
In their most recent game, the Blackhawks scored at will in the early innings – despite only recording five hits on the afternoon. It was perhaps the keen eyes of the Oxford batters that provided the hugely important 12 walks in the ballgame. But don’t be fooled by the great offensive play – low strikeouts, high on base percentage and a handful of hits.
Defensively, 10 errors did not help the Blackhawk cause on the night of June 29, as seven of the 11 runs scored by Greene were unearned runs.
For those baseball fans keeping score at home – it’s tough to win ballgames that way.
But give credit where credit is due, and that would be to the Trojans who put the baseball in play, amassing six hits and nine walks in the ballgame. Notably, be sure to credit Greene for their impeccable fielding exhibition by only committing three errors in the game from a streaky Oxford team.
Regardless of last week’s miscues and successes, the Oxford Blackhawks (3-2) are looking at turning the corner on their season before postseason play begins within the next week. Oxford seeks to avenge their prior loss to Cherry Valley-Springfield with first pitch set for July 6, at 6 p.m. at Oxford High School.
