Local foundations honored for backing Sherburne revitalization project

SHERBURNE – In honoring local charitable foundations for their continuous support in renovating the village over the last six years, the Village of Sherburne has placed a plaque on its newly renovated handicap-accessible Municipal Building as of Wednesday, June 12. The plaque can be viewed on the building's front beneath the Village Seal.
It's reported that in 2009, the Village of Sherburne Streetscape Committee and Tree Commission accepted the task of spearheading a renovation of the village's historic 1985-87 Main Street Preservation Revitalization Project.
“The new project's purpose was two-fold: to ensure that the Village Center would continue to provide aesthetic enhancement and enjoyment for visitors, as well as promote increased traffic for its existing merchants to attract future economic development,” said Joyce Steward, Village of Sherburne.
As a result of the project, updated light poles, electrical work, sidewalk, concrete and curbing repairs, tree replacement, and public handicap-accessibility were among the aspects addressed.
“Using the project architect's suggestions and updates to the 1985-87 design, a cost analysis was created and the project plans were completed in stages over a six-year period,” added Steward. “It was a costly project that could not have been accomplished without the commitment of yearly financial support grants from The Herbert and Maria Brown Foundation, The R.C. Smith Foundation, The Howard K. Finch Memorial, the Mid-York Foundation, and the Follett Foundation, with assistance from the village's skilled DPW and electrical department employees.”
Representatives from the previously listed foundations were also in attendance at the plaque's formal unveiling at the Sherburne Municipal Building on June 12.
