CHENANGO COUNTY – Drivers in Chenango County texting behind the wheel may be more likely to get caught in the foreseeable future.
On Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee to study “Textalyzer” technology, which is designed to detect if a cell phone was used in the moments before a crash.
The committee will hear from advocates and other stakeholders to issue a report on their findings.
The Traffic Safety Committee and its member agencies will study existing technology to crack down on texting. It will also consider constitutional and legal issues associated with that technology, the implementation and use of that technology in other jurisdictions, and statutory amendments needed for the implementation of such technology.
Despite laws that ban phone use while driving, many motorists persist. According to the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research, 2,784 people were injured and 12 killed in cell phone crashes from 2011-2015. Motorists were issued 1.2 million tickets for cell phone violations.
In 2015, police issued 217,000 tickets for cell phone violations, 39 percent of which were for texting.
