Norwich City judge injured in fatal motorcycle crash

WALTON –Following a fatal motorcycle accident on Sunday, a City of Norwich judge was seriously injured and his wife, a passenger, was killed.

The Delware County Sheriff's office reported that 67-year-old Nancy A. Cushman, of Norwich, died in an accident Sunday evening and the motorcycle's operator, an appointed City of Norwich judge, James G. Cushman, was seriously injured following a collision with a farm tractor on State Highway 206 in the Town of Walton.

Nancy A. Cushman was pronounced dead at the scene after the motorcycle struck a farm tractor as it turned off the highway and she was thrown from the passenger's seat, police reported. The motorcycle's operator, James Cushman, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton before being airlifted to UHS Wilson Memorial Center in Johnson City for treatment.

The accident occurred in a no-passing zone as the couple traveled south, reported police.

James Cushman is an appointed Norwich City judge, and is due to step down at the end of the year after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70, reported the Norwich City Court Clerk's Office.

“Preliminary investigation by Sheriff’s deputies, investigators and members of the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit revealed that 45-year-old James R. VerNooy of Walton was driving a farm tractor in a northerly direction on State Highway 206 and had begun to make a left turn when a northbound motorcycle operated by 70-year-old James G. Cushman of Norwich struck the tractor’s front end loader bucket while attempting to overtake and pass the tractor in a no passing zone in the southbound lane,” stated the Delaware County Sheriff's Office Monday afternoon.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police said they are currently seeking a female witness who was driving a full-size, white Sport Utility Vehicle, with the hope of identifying and interviewing her.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident or have information that might aid law enforcement are asked to immediately contact the Delaware County Sheriff's Office at (607) 832-5555.
