Norwich City judge critically injured in fatal motorcycle crash
WALTON – Following a fatal motorcycle accident on Sunday, a City of Norwich judge remains in critical condition and his wife, a passenger, was killed.
The Delaware County Sheriff's office reported that 67-year-old Nancy A. Cushman, of Norwich, died in the accident Sunday evening and the motorcycle's operator, an appointed Norwich City Court judge, James G. Cushman, was seriously injured after the couple's motorcycle crashed as it attempted to pass a farm tractor on State Highway 206 in the Town of Walton.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Cushman remained in critical condition at the UHS Wilson Memorial Center in Johnson City, said the hospital's spokeswoman. He was seriously injured in the crash, reported police, and taken to Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton before being airlifted to Wilson Memorial on Sunday.
Mrs. Cushman was pronounced dead at the scene after their motorcycle struck the farm tractor as it turned left off the highway and she was thrown from the passenger's seat, according to police reports.
The accident occurred in the southbound lane, in a no-passing zone, as the couple traveled north, reported police.
Mr. Cushman is a long-time area attorney and an appointed Norwich City judge. He is due to step down at the end of the year after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70, reported the Norwich City Court Clerk's Office.
“Preliminary investigation by Sheriff’s deputies, investigators and members of the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit revealed that 45-year-old James R. VerNooy of Walton was driving a farm tractor in a northerly direction on State Highway 206 and had begun to make a left turn when a northbound motorcycle operated by 70-year-old James G. Cushman of Norwich struck the tractor’s front end loader bucket while attempting to overtake and pass the tractor in a no passing zone in the southbound lane,” stated the Delaware County Sheriff's Office Monday afternoon.
For the last two decades Mrs. Cushman has been the owner and operator of the Season’s Gift Shop in Norwich.
She was the oldest of ten children and grew up in Medina, New York, before attending college. The Cushman’s met at Alfred University and married while they were still attending school.
After finishing college and law school, the couple moved back to the Norwich area with their children. Mr. Cushman opened a law office and Mrs. Cushman worked at Skillin’s Jewelers in Norwich before starting her own business.
The Cushmans, along with another partner, purchased property many years ago encompassing the Colonia movie theater and other buildings. They refurbished the theater and other down-town Norwich properties, saying at the time, they wanted to invest-in and improve the local community.
A complete obituary will be published at a later date.
As of Tuesday, the sheriff's office said police were no longer seeking additional witnesses in the case, but the investigation remains ongoing.
