UTICA – The Norwich High School girls varsity volleyball team became champions of the Monday night summer league at Mohawk Valley Community College after beating Mt. Markham, 3-1, on Monday, July 31.
“They’re a great, hard-working bunch of girls,” said NHS girls varsity head coach Shelly Alger. “I’m so proud of both [NHS] teams.”
Of the 15 competing teams, Alger says Norwich brought two teams: The championship winning ‘purple’ team, and a younger, ‘white’ team, fostering two seventh graders.
Teams from hailing from Sauquiot, Proctor, Adirondack, Morrisville, Clinton, Stockbridge, Cooperstown, and Waterville all competed in the summer league that the NHS purple team would win, finishing with an impressive record of 24-2.
“[The white team] actually made it to the gold bracket with the purple team, which is a great accomplishment,” said Alger.
The NHS white team finished with a respectable record of 14-6.
