Byrne announces run for Norwich City Court Judge

NORWICH – Maureen Byrne, Norwich attorney and former part time Norwich City Court Judge, has formally announced her candidacy for the full time position of Norwich City Court Judge.

She is the only candidate with prior judicial experience. Maureen seeks the position because she feels she can do good.

“I have given this a great deal of thought," said Byrne. "I view this opportunity as a call to service. I feel I can do some good for the Norwich community. The extent of my background and prior judicial experience brings a level of preparedness to this important role. Norwich is a wonderful City but we do have some challenges. I believe I can help with those challenges. I cannot think of another position I would rather have right now than that of Norwich City Court Judge. It would be an honor to serve”.

Maureen’s diverse legal career spans over 30 years. First, as an Assistant District Attorney in Monroe County where she was assigned to Rochester City Court handling hundreds of misdemeanor cases per week and later successfully trying felony criminal cases to jury verdict. Immediately following her criminal law experience, she became a municipal attorney with the litigation department of the City of Rochester Department of Law where she successfully tried civil cases to jury verdict in both New York State Supreme Court and in U.S. Federal Court.

Later, she was an attorney with a prestigious top 100 U.S. law firm where she faced the challenges of defending complex product liability cases venued in Supreme Court in Manhattan. She has also briefed and argued appeals to the Appellate Division, Fourth Department in Rochester and to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Manhattan.

Maureen is a past President of the Greater Rochester Association for Women Attorneys, an honor bestowed upon those individuals respected by their colleagues and who demonstrate the utmost professional competence, leadership and integrity.

Maureen founded her own law firm for the general practice of law in her hometown of Norwich New York in 1996. She served as Acting Norwich City Court Judge from 2001-2006 and then as part time Norwich City Court Judge in 2007. During her term, she was called to preside over cases in the busy City Courts of Binghamton and Elmira when the judges there were absent or disqualified.

Maureen was born and raised in Norwich as were her parents, the late Anna Rose and George Byrne. Their support and encouragement was a very positive influence in her life. She is a graduate of St Paul’s School, Norwich Senior High School (where she was President of her senior class and named “most versatile”). She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Nazareth College of Rochester and her Juris Doctor Degree from Notre Dame Law School.

Maureen’s name will appear on the ballot on November 7, 2017.
