County health dept. offers immunization clinics as part of Immunization Awareness Month

CHENANGO COUNTY – As the back-to-school season quickly approaches, the Chenango County Department of Health says it’s also an ideal time to make sure your children are up-to-date on their vaccines.

In aligning Immunization Awareness Month with other partners nationwide, the county Department of Health has designated August as Immunization Awareness Month in Chenango County.

The goal, according to Mary Klockowski, RN, Immunization Coordinator at Chenango County Health Department, is to highlight the importance of immunizations for people of all ages, and to assure that children returning to school are protected with the proper vaccines.

“Getting children all of the vaccines recommended by CDC’s immunization schedule is one of the most important things parents can do to protect their children from serious diseases,” asserted Klockowski.

According to a release on behalf of the Department of Health’s Health Education Division, vaccines are an important protectant against a number of serious and potentially life-threatening diseases.

Furthermore, the release asserts that a child who is not vaccinated stands the risk of contracting serious diseases and thus can also spread said diseases to others in the classroom and community––including to newborn babies who are too young to be fully vaccinated, or to people with weakened immune systems due to cancer or other health conditions.

“If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to check with your child’s doctor to find out what vaccines your child needs,” said Klockowski.

In order to assure your child is up-to-date on the proper vaccines, contact your child’s doctor and schedule a visit with your provider prior to the start of the school year.

You may also bring your child to the Chenango County Department of Health, where immunization clinics will be held every Wednesday through the month of August. Be sure to call (607) 337-1660 to make an appointment.
