Governor issues insurance guidelines for transgenders
ALBANY – Governor Andrew Cuomo is making efforts that ensure transgendered individuals are protected when it comes to health insurance.
The governor said Wednesday that health insurers can no longer discriminate or deny coverage based on gender identity.
This, according to Cuomo, ensures that transgenders get coverage regardless of whether they present as the gender to whom the service is typically or exclusively provided.
A Department of Financial Services circular letter instructs health insurers to take extra steps in determining whether the insured is eligible for services prior to denying a claim.
