Saturdays in the Park with Chobani vendors series: Walling's Maple Syrup

SOUTH NEW BERLIN – For over 25 years, Walling’s Maple Syrup has provided the community with locally cultivated maple products that not only taste good, but are good for you.

Today, Walling’s Maple Syrup obtains its maple through 6,000 taps in the region, manufacturing roughly 20 times the amount of maple it did upon its inception.

“We do everything with maple,” said owner of Walling’s Maple Syrup, Kern Walling. “Maple syrup, maple candy, maple cream, maple sugar, maple popcorn, maple cotton candy.”

All of these delicacies will be available at Saturdays in the Park with Chobani beginning on September 16 as Walling’s Maple Products makes its return to the market in Norwich’s West Park to continue its mission of educating the public on the health benefits of maple.

“Our major enemy in this country is corn syrup, it kills people,” said Walling. “But maple is all natural. Most people think, ‘Well, if I don’t eat pancakes then I don’t need syrup,’ but it has so many uses. And so it’s not just about us selling the product––it’s about educating people on the health benefits.”

In addition to harvesting natural maple, Walling said that as of January of this year, Walling’s Maple Products are a certified organic business.

“We’ve used organic practices for years, we just hadn’t filled out the paperwork to say we’re organic until now,” said Walling.

Saturdays in the Park with Chobani event coordinator Mindy Chawgo has expressed excitement about the return of Walling’s Maple Syrup to the market, saying, “We are very fortunate to have Walling’s Maple Syrup back to our Saturdays in the Park.

“The syrups, maple cotton candy, and the maple covered peanuts have been something that people have come back for week after week,” said Chawgo.

“Saturdays in the Park was phenomenal,” said Walling, in reference to Walling’s Maple Syrup’s experience at the market last year. “It’s a great social event for people to sit down, have a cup of coffee, catch up with one another, and buy some of the products available around here.”

Walling’s Maple Syrup is located at 5845 State Highway 23 in South New Berlin. For more information, visit www.wallingsmaplesyrup.blogspot.com or search ‘Walling’s Maple Syrup’ on Facebook.

Saturdays in the Park with Chobani will run every Saturday morning from September 16 to October 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Norwich’s West Park. The fall market will feature even more vendors than last year, and you can read about a vendor every week in The Evening Sun.
